Poll: Will we ever see a Honda VTEC V8
You know the old rule "There's no replacement for Displacement". Well Honda motors have shown they can make LOTS of power our of a 4 cyl, and a 6 cyl. Do you think we'll ever see a Bad A## VTEC V8?????
#2
I've already seen one, but it was on a boat in the form of an outboard. Honda was displaying a V8 outboard at this year's Tampa boat show (2 weeks ago). The thing was huge and had VTEC written on the cowl. When I asked if they would remove the cowl they said NO! So, it could have had nothing under neath the cowl. However, it sure looked like a finished piece ready to sell.

noone cares about hybrid, its still in its infancy and its shunned by the popular automotive community. hondas push toward hybrid shit may be a nail in their coffin. there is currently no vehicle on the road thats hybrid that is anything more than a cheap, tiny econo-box that gets great gas mileage...not to mention virtually powerless. hybrid has EONS of evolving to do before its accepted by major manufacturers as a true platform to make solid, WEL PERFORMING vehicles and it has a loooong way to go before consumers in the luxury segment will be ready to give up their V8 vehicles...thats for sure.

supra had an inline 6 3.0litre, i believe.
i'm sure Honda will have to get a v8. but other cars will be running something bigger by then.
honda will prolly start off with a 4.0 or 4.5 V8

you're nuts if you think it's eons away....with gas prices staying up, people making less money....it will be the only logical choice.

we are talking about the luxury segment specifically. honda may be planning on making hybrid shit boxes till the cows come home but ANY manufacturer that brings out a hybrid luxrury car will be laughed out of existance. people who drive and buy luxury cars dont give a shit about gas prices, they want the prestige, the power, and the bragging rights associated with the biggest baddest most powerful cars. hybrid will not succeed in the luxury market until that barrier can be broken and i wouldnt expect to see it for decades.

IMA gives you all the power you want and need. We'll see who laughs last......

I guess my question would be...
For what???
What Honda/Acura cars out there NEED a V8? Their cars compete VERY well in the current classes they're in. And motor displacement size is very comparible across competing lines.
No caddilac-like "boats" exist, which has traditionally been a V8 market.
No real muscle cars exist, which MAYBE the exception of the NSX (more like an exotic).
An Accord, a TSX, TL... Those are all V6 types of cars. Look at where a V8 is currently shoe-horned into. NOTHING like what is offered in the Honda/Acura lineup.
No need with the current lineup, that's for sure.
Now if something changes in the lineup, then we could revisit this. Current needs... NOPE!!!
Just my $0.02...

And Acura isn't the only one talking about performance/power hybrids. I know Lexus has announced that an RX330 hybrid is coming very soon.
Sure, right now hybrid isn't getting a lot of respect beyond the econoboxes...but I think that will change shortly when you start seeing a 400hp AWD supercar that gets 40mpg.
I think the type of people that buy luxury cars will look at a window sticker on a GS 430 and see:
290hp V8 19/25mpg
And a window sticker on an RL and see:
400hp V6 IMA 40/35mpg
They're going to be impressed by the more power, better milage and new technology. Remember, Americans like new technology.
But that's just my opinion...

its coming man, IMA is gonna be huge. even Ford and GM have plans to put it in their light trucks and cars in the next year or two. soon you can have a 40MPG truck to take the kids to soccer practice in...

Honda F1 cars have a 3.0L V10 already
Oh... you mean in a stock car ??
With the torque of a v8, they'd have to move to a AWD or RWD platform to surport it.
My vote: maybe

as Greenmonster said they ahve v10s and im pretty sure that they make/ made v12's for endurance racing a few years back,
think of how great there v8s would be with vtec, high compression, high revving, wow that would be tons of fun
but i think it would deffinatly ahve to go with a rwd.

dodge chrysler and cadillac are switching about 6 cars total over to either awd or rwd and cancelling out what remains of their slim fwd lines by 05. ie. intrepid, 300M, etc. I believe that acura will be soon to follow as hp keeps bumping unless they do IMA in the rear.

I think the technology is not very far away. Maybe 2-3 years if we get a new president...
Apparently jimcol doesn't have very much respect for electric motors as he has never seen them in action.
They are very powerfull indeed.
And the consumer is not totally stupid. Most people know when they are getting shafted and will go where either 1. the power is 2. where the efficiency is.
CHANGE IS UPON US

The way I see it, Honda also has to make cars for its own country, and they really cant be having behemoth cars with v8's driving around in japan. If they were to make a car with a v8 it would probably be one model. Honda is all about being small yet effective.
I think Honda would rather take pride in making the technologically advanced smaller engine that can take a v8

I agree with Jim. It is just a matter of time for Honda to realize that hybrid is no replacement for a decent V8 engine. They should know that people shopping for super car really care less about fuel economy.

Question 1?
Okay, Hybrid, IMA or V8, Do you think we will ever see a 350hp RWD luxury sedan/coupe out of Honda??
My answer: Not until they are forced to by the competition!! Like someone said -- Would they dsign an engine just for the US?
Question 2?
IF we did get a V8 VTEC (~4.6L) what would the horsepower be?
Bill how many horses was that Marine engine putting out?
