Philly-area AutoX
Hey guys and gals,
I'm autocrossing my mostly stock CL-P in this area and thought I'd share some experiences.
First autox in the CL was with everything stock except my 17" wheels and 215/50-17 tires. Still qualifies as G Stock because the CL-S has that size standard. Learned that our car is a boat and desperately needs to be lowered and stiffened. Rolled those poor tires over no matter how much air pressure I had. Only 3 cars in class, and I won.
Next time was rained out (due to lightning). Was gonna go full stock, with the OEM wheels and tires just to beat them up. Instead I went home and installed my new Tein SS coilovers.
Last weekend I autoxed in the Philly event and there were 17 cars in GS. Lots of Mini Cooper S (which I think are incorrectly classed) and a hodgepodge of others. Lowered the car about 2" and stiffened the damping about 1/2 way (bumpy course!). Car felt MUCH better and I improved throughout my 5 runs. Took 8th of the 17, beaten by a bunch of minis, a guy in (I kid you not) his rental-looking (but not) Pontiac Grand-Am 4-dr with Hoosiers.
Our car isn't the best for autox, but with a few mods, it handles much better and you can focus on learning the course and your technique - instead of worrying about your poor tires and if your tie-rods are gonna snap.
We need more CLs in AutoX! I'm the only one in this area.

Philly region runs theirs all over the place. Last weekend and this sunday are at the Boeing Helicopter plant parking lot, in Ridley Park, just off exit 8. They also run at Nazareth speedway and down at Ripken Stadium around Aberdeen. South Jersey runs theirs at Atco raceway parking lot. North Jersey runs theirs at Englishtown raceway. Check out autox4u.com for a full regional schedule. Susquana region is also pretty closeby.
