P1457 - Unable To Pull Vacuum In Tank

Car started throwing a P1457, which is that it can't pull a vacuum in the thank. Brought it to the shop and they did a full smokedown test and say there's no leak anywhere.

Anyone else experienced this or have suggestions on what I might want to check out? CEL comes on after a few days and I've just been resetting it. Running fine otherwise.

my :

lol they did a smokedown test? That's good for checking hoses/static leaks, but what about the valves that control the EVAP system that could be stuck open?

I wouldn't take my car back there again; they're just going to charge you for each step of the entire troubleshooting process.

My suggestion would be to grab the service manual, and a vacuum gauge from harbor freight or amazon (should be about $20) and troubleshoot the issue yourself. the process is moderately lenghty, but easy to follow.

I think there is a small MPG benefit to a system working properly if you do resolve it; definitely needed to be fixed if you live in a state which requires smog certification.

They checked the entire EVAP system. Didn't find anything wrong along the way. They said everything appears solid.

They charged me nothing for the couple hours of work they put into it. It's my dad's cousins shop. They've been around since 1923 and I trust them and the work they do. I've always had all my vehicles serviced with them.

pssshh. In that case I’d keep going back and back and back until they found the issue. 😊Chances are it’s a stuck valve that’s not consistent in failure.

Strangely, the girlfriends Jeep recently started throwing a code for a similar issue. New purge valves for everyone.

I recently battled the P1457 code and unfortunately you end up just loading up the parts cannon. I started with a gas cap gasket and new purge valve. Didn't solve it so I ended up doing the vent valve and that didn't do it so I just went ahead and replaced the charcoal canister and all the lines going to the EVAP system. That finally got it! good luck!
