The manual says to fill it to 32 PSI when the tires are cool.

That means when they heat up during driving the PSI will prolly expand to the max of 41.

Dont fill them to the max of 41 when the tires are cold... otherwise there will be too much pressure when their hot.

I disagree, keep it at 40, the tires do not warm up and expand that much. I was auto-Xing and had them at 40 without seeing an increase in PSI. I increased to 50 for the runs and went back to 40 when I left. The pressure on the tire is correct. The book includes CL-P and S, I believe that P tires are at 32 psi.

No I disagree.

Not only does the book recomend 32PSI... but so does the sticker in your door... which is CL-S specific.

And yes... it is scientific fact that air expands dramatically when heated... and it is known that air within tires heats dramatically along with the rubber...

If you were autocrossing at 40PSI... then you must have had some shitty runs... because the higer the pressure in the tires... the less grip you have.

BTW... the figure is 1 pound per square inch per 10 degree increase.

There was a R&T article last year in which they were testing cars they were racing and they took thermal readings of the tires at different stages. When I get home... I will find those readings to show you how much the heat increases during spirited driving.

But in the meantime... go drive at 55mph for a few miles... then stop... and feel your tires. They will be very hot to the touch... so you can figure... if its 30 degrees out... and your tires feel about 100-110 degrees... you can figure about a 8psi increase in tire pressure... so... if you fill at when cold to 32PSI... youre tires will be at 40PSI while driving on the highway.

No?

Most important factor anyway... make sure that when your tires are at their coldest temp... they are never below 32PSI.

I agree with the Soop except for one thing. When I took my car to Skip Barber, they inflated the tires to 40PSI for their short 1/2 mile twisty track. Without the increase, the car was wallowing all over. That was for my 98 Maxima. Since this car is much heavier it would be awful with just 32PSI! My $.02.

There is no way that you would get a 8 psi increase by running the car hard or at high speeds. As for time at the track, the times were better as the pressure was increased, optimum seemed to be at 50 psi in the front right and back two tires 45-48 in the left front during auto-x. Reason is you want the back to skip a bit and the front right to hold it's shape and not roll on the sidewall.
This was recommended by many drivers of front wheel drive cars, of course there are changes that you make for each course. Wouldn't it make some sense to match what is on the tire more than what is in the book? Just another point, Ford recommended a psi on the Goodyear tires that was less than it should have been as well.

Just so everybody knows. The max rating on the tire is the max "cold" rating. So, you can safely inflate to the max rating and the psi will indeed go above the max rating when they are hot but that is ok. The tire might be fine, but your suspension won't like it very much.

from what i know, you should go by what the manual or metal tags on the tire (which is also cold pressure) 'cuz the max on the tire is generic and doesnt' take into consideration the max weight the car can carry.

from experience, after a normal drive (several miles at regular and highway speeds), my tires are usually at most 5 psi over the cold pressure.

You should always use the proper psi.... Especially if you drive an Explorer.
