opinions on tire siping?
My brother in law was visiting from the Seattle area and he mentioned that he had tire siping done to all his tires. I guess they cut the tread to increase traction. He also said that the manufacturers endorse it.
Do you guys think that it really works? Or how does it affect the life of the tire? Is it just a scam from tire companies up there to make an extra $100?

Where is my super sauce?
I've not heard of tire siping as an aftermarket mod. This should be an interesting thread.
Yes, siping is one of the basic differences between all-season tires and summer-tires and does increase road grip (along with compound differences). I could see how increasing the 'sipes' would add traction. My only question would be if it would negatively effect the tire's construction, but somehow I doubt it would.

i have it done to my tires and i gotta say it does help improve traction a bit and doesnt seem to effect the tread life at all. all the discount tire employees have it done to theirs also

Why not just buy more of an all season tire to begin with?
Are the sips placed, perpendicular or horizontal to the tire?
If they are horizontal you would have to rebalance your tire, unless the sips were placed at a calculated interval.

It's legitimate. My mom had a set siped for her mini-van and they work very well. When I talked with the folks at Discount they shyed away from doing it on a performance tire like my Paradas. Apperently if they sipe the "softer" stickier tires they will wear up prematurely. For the tires with a harder compound there is NO difference in tread life and in fact can make the tires last longer by helping them dissapate heat.

Helps with wet weather, snow, etc. if done properly.
The sipes will "generally" reduce grip in dry conditions. Most of the ultra-high performance and max-performance tires have no siping.
BFG KDW (dry/wet), and KDWS (dry/wet/snow):
