Simple, change the oil, 15 minute job on a good day. Not this time. Drain the oil, change out filter pre lubing the seal as always. Add new oil and start the engine, oil pouring from the oil filter? WTF. Maybe it is not tight. No still leaking oil EVERYWHERE, damn. Tighten the filter a little more and notice the seal sticking out the side. Drain out remaining new oil thinking new filter seal failed. No, the seal from the old filter came off and stayed in place so when the new filter was installed it would not seat correctly. Spent the next hour cleaning up the engine compartment. You can bet I will NEVER change another oil filter without checking to make sure the seal is still on the old filter. I have classic cars and do a lot of oil changes at home, have never had this happen.

Wow, I guess I'll never change the filter without checking it again either.. That sucks! If you are like me, I have one drain pan only so if I had to drain the new oil out, it would go in with the old oil. Then I'd have to take another trip to the local Autozone. D'oh!
