OEM cold air box
even witht he aem bypass im paranoid driving in the rain...ive been toying with the idea of making my own cold air box using the stock filter box stock vsa and vacuum connections and a auto car parts cone filter ...i will leave off the lower resonator ,but may extend some hose towards the front of the car...my hopes would be better torque simialr too that of the comptech shown on other acrua brands (such as ITR) and less noise...granted the noise from my aem isnt bad but it does scream wot deep into the rpm range where as i would perfer deeper to alittle less loud...i will let you guys know as i go foward ...if this works it will be so easy and so cheap 50$ and 15 minutes...even for AMIR

I dont know whats the paranoia for, I actually got the bypass and CAI together, but was too lazy to install the bypass plus I thought it decreased preformance a little.
it rains or snows here everyday, so far it have been no problems. I just dont belive that water from rain or under body can just get sucked in, unless its dipped in water.
why dont you install a second bypass, I'll sell you mine

im from michigan...unless you've moved to seatlle it doesnt rain or snow every day...but let me tell you...like i know lake huron is balls busting cold...even in the dead of summer, you dont know rain unless you've been to Fl. in july....5 inches in an hour then an hour later 95* and cant tell it ever rained...you can get caught in some deep water...but ...less for my fear of the water and more for the sound and oem look im concidering this easy project...

I live in Portland, Or, land of much rain. My car sits pretty low . Yet I have no bypass on my cai. You wont see me driving thru puddles and standing water though. I believe to hydro my car would still take like 15" of water. AEM likes raking in that extra $45 i'm sure, i'll buy a sack w/ that and use common sense. I am not reccomending anyone follow my example, keep your baby safe however you can.

I've toyed with getting a CAI, but was curious about the bypass and need for it. Not sure I would need it either then.
Nice to see another Portland, OR resident!!

TypeR,
I was thinking of doing the same thing as you. Let me know how it goes. My idea was to keep the OEM box and change out the filter for a drop-in K&N or cone filter. The resonator would be removed, and in its place a plastic 3" tubing connected to under the box. At the distal end of the tubing, I was thinking of connecting an RS Akimoto velocity stack, thus allowing for smoother air flow into the box.

If you want a drop in I have a comptech that I only used for 2 months. $40 shipped w/ the uni filter oil.
