Noob w/ some questions.

As the newest member of Acura-CL.com, I'd like to say what up!

I currently have an emerald green 99' Honda Accord coupe F23 with minor interior and exterior mods. After test driving a CL-S and practically nutting in my pants, I am only days away from buying one. Before I buy, I have a few questions for the experts in this forum. So, if you don't mind...

1. How many generations are there?
2. For the current gen, which year did honda/acura do the typical headlight/tailight change?
3. What is a fair price for the a used CL in the current gen?
4. Does the 6 speed really make a difference?

I have many more questions but, I'll try to do a search for them instead of ask. Being a long time member of , I know how frustrating it can be when people ask things that have been asked over and over before doing a search.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Re: Noob w/ some questions.

Your answers... in order :

1. 2 (1997-1999 and 2001-2003. There was no 2000 model)

2. 2003. They added the blacked out headlight housing and the half clear/half red tails. 2001 and 2002 saw no light changes between the model years.

3. Depends on mileage and the year. I've seen 2001's as low as $19k and 2003's as high as $26k

4. Yes. It drops about 1/2 a second off of your 1/4 mile time. Manual trannys are more effecient then autos.... thus, the manual puts more power to the wheels.

Oh, and BTW, welcome to the board

1. How many generations are there?

1997, 1998, 1999 = gen 1
2001. 2002, 2003 = gen 2

2. For the current gen, which year did honda/acura do the typical headlight/tailight change?

2001 and 2002 share headlights and tails. 2003 have the redesigned tails and smoked headlight housings.

3. What is a fair price for the a used CL in the current gen?

depends on a lot of things...type s or not, mileage, which year etc. if you give a description of what you are looking at I / we can give you a fair price.

4. Does the 6 speed really make a difference?

much more fun to drive, and it will take a few ticks off your times.

1. 2 generations
2. 2003
3. 20-23k - 2001
22-25k -2002
26k+ - 2003
4. YES - a lot less power loss due to the manual v. auto tranny ~6 or 7 % diff.

Wow that was quick. Thanks for the answers.

I'm looking for a 1st half 2nd gen type s w/ no more than 50k miles. Navi and 6sp would be nice but I think I live without em. I like the 17"rs that the stock type s's have during those years more than the 03's.

I've heard rumors that the CL-S can gain 30hp w/ just i/h/e. Is that true? If it is WHOOLLLY SHIT... those numbers are unheard of in the accord world. I have i/h/e and I'm lucky if I got 15hp.

the 03 has 17's also, they are just different style. You would not have a problem swapping the 03 rims for 01 or 02 if you like those better. I'd trade with ya.

And yeah it will gain about 30 with I/H/E...90% of that from the headers. They aren't cheap though, comptech headers will cost you up over 1300 installed, exhaust is about 500...just cat back...B pipe is 450

Headers have been dynoed at around 28whp peak.. so yeah.. it's a nice gain. Intake will get you 5-7whp peak and exhaust 1-2, so like Beetroot said... Headers are the best investment.. but they will cost ya....

6 speed manual was only available on the 03

also, if the rumors are true, this new uni-chip will be available very soon and add 7% hp for $650 or so. thats not a bad deal...if thats correct...

I/H = 30hp
7% of 290hp = 20hp

have that bad boy running over 300 horsepower for under 2 grand.

LOL... yeah, I knew they were 17s on the 03 but, now you've made me think the O3's are better or something . They're not lighter are they? Do you know how deep they are? 7, 8 inches?

I noticed comptech makes quite a few things for the CL-s... specially noticed the s/c. That would be ohh sooo sweet. $1300 for headers installed though... damn thats expensive. Is it a hard DIY? cause I installed all the parts on my accord.

500 is about right for exhaust. my accord has a greddy evo and it was $480

thanks Beetroot

Stock CL-S wheels are 17x7.5. Same weight, same spec.. just different design for the 2003's.

Also, keep in mind the Comptech Exhausts are Axle-back. The B-pipe is useless unless you're running a FI setup.

Many people have installed their own headers, so if you're good around a car (which it sounds like you are) you'll be fine. S/C would be a very tough task to do yourself.

supercharger is about $4,000 + installation...and its not an easy DIY.

and no, the 03 rims are no different as far as I know, just looks. I just like em a little better.

and the 500 is really just for the mufflers...for the B pipe that runs the length of the car look at adding another 450. comtech exhaust doesn't really add much, 2-3 hp at the most. They are mostly for sound/looks.

sorry, my post about the DIY was a little confusing... theres no way I'ma DIY an s/c... I meant for the headers.

I did look under the engine of a type s and there isn't much room... honda/acura really cramed that 3.2 in there
