Need Info on Factory Alarm

I have a 2001 CLS with a factory alarm.

When the ignition is off locking the doors activates the alarm.

This can be problematic because when I am exiting the vehicle someone may hit the auto lock button which then causes the alarm to go off because the doors are open. Another scenario is if someone is in the vehicle like my mom or girlfriend and I leave the vehicle for a few minutes it also activates the alarm because when they lock the doors.

I was told by the dealer that this is by design. IMHO this is lame.

Can anyone tell me if this setup is really by design?
If this setup is really by design can anyone tell me the pros to this configuration (because I'm not seeing any)?

Read the manual, if trunk, hood, or any door is not closed properly, alarm will not be armed. If your key is in ignition, alarm will not be armed either.
You can try to leave one door or hood or trunk open then press the LOCK button on your remote. The door look will sink but the LED will not flash which indicate the alarm system is not armed. Hope it helps.
