Need help...whats a crank shaft and ...

Long story short. I noticed small oil leak over the weekend. Brought her in and was told I had a leak in a crank shaft seal ( I think thats what he said).

SO my question is, whats a crank shaft? Why might it be leaking and should I be concerned? Also is there any way to check on the shaft (no jokes please)after the repair?

Damn, second oil leak from yet another site.

Thanks,

Andy

The crankshaft is the large shaft that the piston rods connect to which drives the flywheel. It is the largest moving part in your engine and has very large seals at the ends. You can't really see it as it is inside the engine. However, the ends stick out of the ends of the engine to drive the flywheel and the accessories. Just let them fix it. I am not sure if they have to drop the oilpan and crankshaft to fix it or if they can just remove the front cap.

It's called warranty. Use it. Whether it is a big problem or not, the dealer (or any acura dealer for that matter) should fix it under warranty.

Good Luck.

BTW, this is a serious problem if I were to make an educated guess based on the information provided.

Thanks guys.

There was no way in hell I was going to do anything on my own. I can't even change the wiper blades myself. Just that it sounded like something bad and I wanted to know if there was anything I could check just in case in happens again. Figured it might be easier than just getting paranoid over every oil stain in my garage.

SO do you guys think its completely fixable or something that might come back and haunt me later?

BBS,

I didn't expect anybody to resist the temptation. Use the word shaft and leak in the same paragraph and you're asking for trouble.

Replacing the crankshaft seal is not a serious repair. The labor is 3.3 hours, most of which is removing accessories so the timing cover can be removed. You don't need to be worried about engine damage unless the seal was pouring oil and you continued to drive.
