235/20 or 235/45??? i have comtech springs on my car so im concerned about the tires being too wide. steve at vertex recommend 225/45/17. i've read somewhere on the post that 235/45/17 has a closer wheel radius to the stock. so im not sure what to do at all...

I have 225/45/17's with Comptech springs and there is absolutely no problem at all--none!

As I recall, however, 235's do rub in full turns.

JZ sweet... I am thinking of this size tire also. Are these on stock rims? Is the diameter any different than stock?
Do you have any pics? How is the fender gap w/springs and a lower profile tire?
Sorry for so many questons.

I am running 235/45ZR17-97W* Toyo T1S proxies on stock CL-S rims. Attention: they do not rub -- ever!

(I have not tried this with non-stock rims, or with other makes of tires)

Eric... Do you have pics of your tires. I have comptech springs so I am a little concerned with a 235

Hmmm... If I had a nickel for every time I was asked that question.

No, sorry. You would think that being in the business I'd have a digital camera or even a working SLR camera. Is there a take-a-picture-of-your-tires drive-through?

I asked my buddy over at one of the publicity depts. to have me over, but that was a bust.

I am willing to let someone shoot them at the next LA meet.

When is it? Are we going to Angeles Crest?

The wheel well gap is about the same--the diameter of the tire only changes by like 7mm if I recall correctly. The Potenzas are really awesome--only 130$ each on tirerack.com. I think the 235's stick out more on the sides of the wheels. These tires give lots of grip and are great in the wet. Not so good in the snow--not that you should be surprised about that since they are fat, low profile tires.

How much of an improvement over the stock tires are your Toyo T1-S?

I've seen JZ's tires in person, the drop and tire size look perfect...the fender fill is just about right. I was running 225/40 on my 18's and I had no problems whatsoever until I have 3 fatasses in my car then the rear would start rubbing on hard dips and sharp turns.

Night and day. The original (stock) tires sucked on new pavement and wet concrete (yes, my opinion). The original tires stuck very well on the open face pavement around Angeles Crest HWY.

************
(higher is better)
OEM in wet fwy @ 75 mph = 6
TOYOs in wet fwy @ 75 mph = 9.5

**************
(higher is better)
OEM on dry new pavement (Sunset BLVD past UCLA) = 5
TOYOs on dry new pavement (Sunset BLVD past UCLA) = 9

**************
(higher is better)
OEM on Mulholland and various nasty curves (turn-in/response/stick) = 5.5
TOYOS on Mulholland and various nasty curves (turn-in/response/stick) = 9.8

**************
(10 is great, 1 is terrible)
OEM Ride harshness = 8
TOYO Ride harshness = 7

**************
(1 being very noisy/lots of squeal, 10 = no noise)
OEM road noise (humming, Botts Dots, pig-squeals) = 3
TOYO road noise (humming, Botts Dots, pig-squeals) = 9

To JZ:

My Toyos only look a bit wider than your RE-730s. (After all, the 235 is only 20 mm wider than the OEM 215, that is about 3/4 of an inch wider).

To JZ (part II):

My old RE-71s were so sticky that I could here the sound of sand being picked up by the tires (They were on my Maxima SE). Most of the tire makers are now going to silica/long chain carbon in the new tires.

Do your RE-730s pick up sand/loose stuff and fling it around the wheel wells?

Never thought about them flinging stuff, but I can hear them sticking when I turn the wheel at a very slow speed. They really want to grab the pavement.

That's good to hear about the 235's--maybe next set.

I do have to admit that the Potenzas decreased my gas mileage by 25-30 miles per gallon. Very sticky compared to the Michelin Energy's.

Oops, sorry! I forgot to mention that. I lost 5% in gas mileage with the Toyos.

BTW -- I do hope you only lost 25-30 miles per tank NOT gallon

? What do you think ?

I fixed the post. The numbers were reversed. I really didn't like the stock tires on paint strips, in garages, and on certain surfaces -- they squealed like little piggies. The Toyo T1S Proxies are very quiet. They only make a whoosh sound around turns and on take off.

Not entirely off topic, but I've been told by numerous tire stores that if you get 18" wheels with 235/40, they will rub the fender..... so when I get my 18x8 rims (with comptech springs), I will be getting the 225/40

Well, I got my Toyo T1-S proxes installed today. 235/45-ZR17's. Very awesome.

Now, who is going to buy my almost new (Excellent condition) stock tires? I'll let them go for SUPER cheap.
