My CL-S depreciated 3K in 3 weeks !!!!
I couldnt believe what I was seeing an 03' CL-S type S auto with navi.and 10.5k miles was bought for $19,500 at the auction. I checked out the car and it was mint with no dents nor scratches. The dealer is pissed at me cause they paid me $22K for my car without Navi and now they have to sell cheaper
oh well I quess I did what I did in perfect timing but I still say the cl-s is a solid car and for less than $20K it is a bargain and a half.
I convinced my friend to sell his Galant and buy the car ASAP at $22K with navi and that HOT aegan blue pearl with ebony interior.

that really sucks...I didnt believe it and I requested the key to check it out myself thinking it must have been in an accident and it wasnt. Now my friend wants to buy it and trade in his 97' Galant and now he'll be racing my clk430 giving me a run for my money and he paid less than half than what I paid for my Benz

dealers hate to take in the 6 speed cl-s and they actually give you less than if it was an auto with steptronic
the reason for the depreciation its closer to 04' and discontinued model...and the G35 and 350Z at the auction sell for cheaper and faster..

Instead of Acura APPRECIATION WEEK, we are all subject to Acura DEPRECIATION WEEK(S)!!!
I'm glad I like my car, because I guess I'll be driving it into the ground. No way am I going to give away my car, that has been babied since day 1, to some punk offering me 12K for it!

Auction and depreciation
Cars are worth what the market dictates. You got lucky and the dealer overpaid. Right now, coupes are soft so we suffer a bit. Also a used automatic is worth more since 90% of the driving public does not want a stick, especially in a traffic crowded commute. Personally I like to shift so I gave the PDG CL-S to the wife and I drive the SVTF. I know, it's a Ford, but it still is a blast to drive.

Hmmmm.. so my 1 year old car is now worth about $10K less then what I paid for it. Shit. I bought an Acura 'cause I didn't want to take a depreciation hit on a new car.
If dealers are only willing to pay 20K for my car, I'll be driving it for a very long time

For the folks who are leasing the car with a high residual, it might've been the right choice, cause they dont care about the cars depreciation anyways.(if they wait until the maturity date of course)

It really has nothig to do with what the car is worth. The used car market is in the proverbial toilet. Nothing, other than very desirable cars, are bringing what they are worth.

I posted in July about a new 2003.5 G35c WITH navi/sport package, loaded going for $30K...only 6K miles on it.
That's a $36K car new...so no one is immune to the depreciating market these days.
PLUS...auction + about 3 to 4K is what you'd pay on the lot. So, those numbers aren't far out...considering I bought my CLS 6 for $26,900 OTD.

gto2050, there are some good deals out there, but some sellers have asking prices on some cars that make them look like they are smoking crack. I think some of these "crackheads" are pressured by the wife to sell the car, so they advertise it for 10K more then it's worth, and tell the wife "I can't sell it, so I might as well keep it"
That's the thing about trade in values. The dealer can grab any f'ing number out of the sky. If they hose you on the new car, they can make it look like you got a great trade in. If you get the new car for invoice (I think the AAA price is like 800 over), then it looks like you got a bad trade.
What the dealer offers on the trade in doesn't mean anything unless you know the markup on the other car.
Here's an extreme example: 87 Porsche 911 - 12K miles for $39.8K.
http://www.autotrader.com/findacar/vdetail.jtmpl?car_id=142306367&dealer_id=79177
It's probably a high $20K car (dealer probably got it for 20something). Nice car, but the thing probably stickered for $50K 15 years ago. $40K now ?? I wouldn't pay it, but because of the low miles, somebody will (they sold a 89 like that a couple of months ago). BTW, This is Inskip Porsche, I bought my CLS at Inskip Acura. Big mega-dealership owned by Roger Penske (yes, that Roger Penske)
If I trade in my CLS on this one, heck, they'd probably give me 27K for the CLS. Why, cause they can make up the difference on the 10K markup on the porsche. If I talk 'em down to 30K on the porsche, I'd be looking at getting 20K for the CLS.
That's an extreme example, but if you're trading for a used car, the dealer has some kind of markup that they can play with to make the numbers look anyway they want. They have only a couple of thousand to play with on a new car tho'.
Do a search on - dealer four square - or - dealer four-square and you'll learn more about what I'm trying to get at.

Where is my super sauce?
I just looked at KBB for yucks on the private sale value for my 2003 17K miles loaded 6MT CL Type S and they suggest $26K. The dealer trade-in value they list in about the mid $23K range.
I know that the KBB value is just a guide, but it doesn't seem too shabby.
For me these numbers are irrelevant anyway: I'll keep this car until it disintegrates.

i know the feeling...mine went down over $13k in just over a year...who knows, i thought the 2003's would hold their value a little more, especially the 6speeds, since its the only/last year they were made....oh well, you win some you lose some, but thats why a car isnt a good investment i guess...

I just wanted to bring this to light since the acura is a great car...well now they are going for really cheap for a basically brand new.
I will be test driving it tommorrow with my friend so Ill take some pics of it also. The title is not salvaged at all...remember when I said the car sold for $19.5K at the auction means expect to pay at least $1500 more....so that car should sell for $21K- $22K which is what my friend is buying it at....with Navi though

not to spoil your day, but you dont even want to know what clk430's go for at auction........mark up in pre-owned MB's is insane ..............$19.5 is way too low for a 2003 CL-S, you could drive the car to most acura dealers and they would pay more than, that, check the black book

I don't care what "book" you use...none of them are on the money.
Auctions in your area determine value...Manheim, Keystone, etc. I think...in a few years...the 6 speed will be a sought after model. Of course, that's not helping anyone of us now...

well all i can say is, Kelly Blue Book has my car worth $24k at a private party sale and only $21k for a trade...in all honesty, i know the miles play a factor (33k), but i never expected to pay $35k for an automobile and turn around a year and a half later and it depreciate that much...i dont know...wishful thinking i guess
