At least one member put Bridgestone Potenza RE730's on the stock wheels and he's a happy guy. They look aggressive as well. I also remember reading that a member had Toyo Proxes on as well.

Does Michelin make a higher quality tire than the factory tires of the same size?

Don't want to get off the beaten path too much, but when I put the springs on my car my traction with the stock tires increased DRAMATICALLY. I still cannot believe how much traction I have. From a standstill with VSA off, I can barely get a chirp Prior to the springs, my front tires were going up in smoke at anything over 1/2 throttle! So if you're looking for traction... get the springs!

yup after getting springs traction improved greatly and you can feel the tires griping more of the road but after getting headers the tires spin out too much due to increased power. I think Z rated tires will solve this problem for me.

Toyo T1-S proxes. I have them, they are super sticky. About 100X better than stock tires. Of course, I got 235 width, but any high performance tire will be much stickier than stock. Our stock tires are touring tires by all accounts.

The Toyos are the best made (IMHO) but I've heard they are more prone to puncturing and so forth and wear out quickly.

However, I've had mine for about 1000 miles and ZERO signs of wear and no problems. I think people just complain too much, TOYO are awesome tires, expensive, and the best performers. Just my opinion....

it really depends how much you want to spend....the Bridgestone Potenza RE730's are good tires. Check out www.tirerack.com and review some of the data they have on the tires...actually, i'm super bored...i'll do it for you, give me a few minutes

Along with the increased traction be comes decreased tread life , put sways and springs on mine and my car has a little over 22k miles on them and the front tires are bald (little bit of ribs left, but no tread whatsover in the middle..makes for interesting driving in water !). Now i've done one high speed driving event, and two autocrosses but I don't think it would have affected tread life that much.

No the big questions is tire replacement, may go with the Yokohama's but looking at the tread pattern it looks kind of scary.

If you want one of the best tires go with the Goodyear G-force. The sidewalls are stiffened with plastic inserts so that they do not flex while cornering.

The Toyo T1S Proxies in 235/45ZR17-97W have a higher load rating than stock; handle 50 lbs of pressure; fit on the stock rims; and are stickier in the wet than the stock tires are in the dry. I know, since I've been driving around in the rain and the tires stick like glue. A good dealer can get them for you for a bout $150 ea.

I dumped my Michelins at about 200 miles -- they sucked on smooth concrete and new pavement. The new tires (Toyos) transform the car. They are so sticky, that leaving VSA on vs VSA doesn't make much of a difference unless I'm running 100 octane. (And yes, 100 octane makes a difference in our cars)

BTW -- don't waste money on the S-01s. They are older tires. If you want to spend that kind of money get the Toyos, S02s, RE-730s, or other Max performance/Ultra performance tire. Finally, check Tire Rack again. Their customer rating is constantly changing. The old champ was the RE-730. The new "ruler" is the Firestone SZ50EP (made by Bridgestone). This tire uses technology from the S-02 for much less money. It -- like the RE-730 -- is not an XL rated tire *and* is currently available in 245/45-17 -- so it is a tad big for the stock rims. 238mm is the correct rolling radius for a 45 series replacement tire on a 17" rim.

1. I have a GTECH, but haven't done a comparison between 92 Shell and the 100 octane I get down by Pacific Coast Hwy in Los Angeles.

2. I have really sticky TOYO T1S proxy tires *and* I've done GTECH runs with/without the VSA on before I tried the 100 octane. At that time, I would only get a quick blink of the VSA light and no time difference to 60. I now have gotten 100 octane a few times and have tried:
a. Adding 10 gals of 100 octane to 7 gals of Shell Premium.

b. "Filling up" with 14 gals of 100 octane with 3 gals of Shell Premium in tank.

c. Adding 4 gals of 100 octane to top off car.

In a. and b., I noticed a distinct increase in power and could really light up the VSA light and could get the Toyos to spin for a second or two with the VSA off. My butt-o-meter tells me that the car is much faster with the rocket fuel. In case c., I didn't notice any difference from my Shell Premium gas.

Conclusions:

1. If you are going to the track or going to race, get some 100 octane gas.

2. You will feel a difference if you put at least a half a tank of 100 octane in our car (in addition to the existing premium).

3. The knock/ping sensors in our car are retarding the ignition when I use the Shell Premium. I beleive it is 92 octane.

Notes:

The stuff is very expensive. "Mike" found an article on making your own octane booster, perhaps he can post the link to the site.

I left a post about a month ago with the name, phone number, and picture of the gas station that sells the 100 octane I buy.

You might want to search on "100 octane" for more info.
