I am going to inspect a 2001 CL, and it has a check engine light on.
I want to know exactly which reader I will need to read the code, because I will borrow one from a friend, and I also Want to know if there is any way I can verify that the mileage on the odometer is the actual mileage on the car, and that there has been no monkey business. Thank You
Great forum by the way I have been snooping around recently.

Any scan tool can tell you the code number, and the better ones will give you a description, such as P0234, Primary O2 sensor or whatever. As for the correct mileage, it probably is. It cannot be turned back since it is in the ECU. I have heard of only one case in seven years on this site that a dash gauge cluster was changed with the donor car's ECU as well into a high mileage car to read a new lower number.

I dont think this guy is sheisty enough to change the ecu, but possibly the cluster. Is there a way that I can retrieve the mileage from the ECU. I ran a carfax on the car and there are only 2 records for the car, and the mileage rediculously low for a 2001. Can I read the mileage on the ECU somehow?? Please help I will be inspecting the car on Saturday, and would like to get whatever hardware I need ready. Thank you.
