Mid 80's 911 turbo

This weekend I was driving home and had a mid 80's Porsche 911 come flying up behind me. I moved over to the left lane as soon as I past the car next to me and quickly shifted in to SS and down to 3rd. Nothing but open road ahead - Gunned it and the Porsche ran right by me - saw the turbo badging at this point. From 75 - 100 he pulled away (had a huge momentum advantage, since I had to move over/downshift etc.), but from 100+ I was gaining on him and darn near even by 125. Thought about my life/tickets/jail/mangled CL metal (anyone see that Integra in 3 pieces on True Life this weekend?) etc. and qucikly shut it down as he continued to speed on - I know, not real smart, but spare me the lecture
I didn't really know what to expect, but thought the CL held its own - anyone know how fast the early 911 turbos were/are?

I raced one also.. mid 80s porsche. 911 body style.. i didnt know if it was turbo..couldnt hear the sound.. but he did have a 'RUF" badge in the back..haha..we raced twice..from 60km/h at 3rd..i downshifted to 2nd.. and he downshifted also.. he could not catch up for some reason.. well i did downshift first..but i expect he would of caught up.. neways..i shut it down at 120km..and he did a ricer fly-by.. but then ran into him again at the lights then.. so we raced again.. this time he beat me..cuz he launched.. i think he launched from above 4K..so he got a car length lead .. by second and mid 3rd.. he was about car and a half..could not catch up.. but at least i still beat em from a roll..hahaha.... i dont think mid 80's porsches are that fast....although his engine sounded loud.. and he had thick tires.. man i miss manual trans...

You are correct - The non-turbo, mid '80's Porsches are not that fast. A friend of mine has one and our CL-S's will dust it. However, I have never run a Turbo before the one above. It seemed pretty darn fast...although he did have a big momentum advantage - had to let off the gas in order to SS into 3rd - I miss the manual too..need 6spd! If the one you ran with was a true RUF, you had a good run...RUF puts some serious muscle in those things from what I've read. I've looked for some times on the '85-'87 Turbos, but can't find anything.

CL-S usually cannot run with any Porsche with the badging "RUF or TURBO".

It was probably a fake!

I know some folks down in Laguna Nigel that are so fast they only run with bikes.

Heard one of their RUF's ran 0-60 in about 3.0 seconds!

eard something about a converted "3.8" 996 Turbo with twin spark plug heads, four intercooled, contained pressurized air turbos, with about 750 hp. to the rears.

Pretty amazing!

A new 911 Turbo pulled up to me at the lights... i looked at him, he looked back.. i was like what the hell... it turned green and floored it in SS mode.... all i saw was the porsche pulling away by 2 cars length with ease... i think he only has half throttle too... i was laughing at myself at the end... what was i thinking.... but oh well... wanted to test how many cars will those monsters pull on us.... i think if he gunned it maybe 4-5 cars more...

Agreed - I did a little research this weekend and found the 70's early 80's turbos ran just under 6 sec to 60mph - mid eighties slightly faster I would guess. Remember though - the car was at least 15 years old...if not maintained well, I do think the CL-S would beat it. As for the RUF - Damn those are fast!! I can't imagine anyone w/ a RUF hasn't maintained it well, so I won't be challenging one any time soon!!:P
