May have got 87 octane gas, what to do...

Was on my to work kinda in a hurry, anyway in NJ you can't pump your own gas, so I stoped at a shell to get some gas, guy comes up and I tell him give me 10 on premium, normally I look to make sure they do the right thing...Well this time I did'nt and notice after the fact the fool put 87 in....so pissed...Anyway, I got about half a tank of it...So I'm thinking I should go over to Sonoco after work and fill the rest up with 94, hoping it'll mix and avg out, not sure if thats correct or not? I guess I wondering as long as I keep the rpms low can I avoid any pinging, or is there anything else I should do.....

Will not have an effect on the car. The computer will reduce the output of the engine to match the new octane. You might notice some reduced power and mileage but that is it. Don't worry

I had the same thing happen to me in Jersey; I told the guy to fill up premium and of course he puts in regular. I was also in a hurry so I didn't really check but when I realized I freaked out at the guy.

I guess they are useto pumping regular since premium is so expensive he did it out of habit.

Nothing happened to the car, there was some reduced power but I soon as I had half a tank I filled up with premium.

Don't worry!!

It's cool. The PCM is more than capable of compensating.

In fact, several members have been running their cars on 87 for a long time with no problems, although personally I would highly recommend against that.

I had a memeber at the MD meet tell me he has been running regular for years and hasn't had a problem.

man . . . I'd sell it right away . . . I mean it's been violated with cheap gas . . that's kind of like getting sloppy seconds . . :P

no worries, and yes you can add some premium to it and it'll average out some.

The guy probably thinks that his 25mpg on the highway is normal.

I tried running 87 when I was doing long trips but noticed a big decrease in MPG. Get like 30 with 93 but that went down to like 26 or so when I was using regular

Wow, never heard of not being able to pump your own gas. Here you basically have to pump your own, never see stations anymore that do it, that used to cost more than self-serv. NJ law is crazy, must be a union thing, it's not rocket fuel...er science?

Ah you have never heard of the wonderful world of jersey then.

Worst law ever. Heard that it was created back in the day as a job stimulator but now all it does is frustrate any and all motorists that have to drive thru that god forsaken state. Because they normally have only 2 guys working they only open 2-4 pumps (even when the station has 12 of them) so you sit there waiting in line, wasting gas, looking at the unused pumps while some gas monkey pumps your gas for you.

And yeah there is no real "full service" going on. I am sure if i asked them to check my oil they would ask me to pop the trunk so they could get to the spare tire.

Stupid state :nj:

Actually, when they're not busy ... some of the gas stations in NJ will still clean your windshield for you and offer to check your oil. When they're busy they don't do any of it.

Its kindof nice though when its super hot or freezing cold out to not have to hop out of your car to get gas. Kindof annoying when you're in a rush though. I always worry about whether they click the gas cap 3 times and make sure that they don't drip gasoline on the car as they're taking out the pump.

And as far as 87 octane goes, I believe even the manual says if you can't find 91 or 89 octane gas that you can safely use 87 octane gas but that you should switch back to 91 as soon as possible.

No worries though!

What he doesn't know is that his engine is under constant timing advance because 87 detonates earlier than 91+. Our engines were meant to be used with 91+, and thus programmed for that.

Causing unnecessary stress on the engine to save a buck at the pump = a big no-no in my book. But to each his own.

I would make the sumbitch get on his knees and suck the gas out through a hose. "I bet you can suck a golfball through a garden hose!"

Anybody know where that's from? I'll give ya a hint. Private Pyle.

we don't pump our own gas here in OR either.

your car will be fine. fill it up w/ super after you burn 1/2 the tank if you're worried about it.

get a big ass straw from 7-11, and suck that low octane poison out

i live in NJ too, and that crap happens to me ALL the time. i ask for 94 octane, bastard puts in 87... and dont get the "octane booster" crap, it barely raises your octane. if you want a true octane booster i would put in some toluene in, but you'll be fine with the low octane your ecu will retard timing accordingly

where in nj ru from?

Dude, be happy it wasn't diesel!! You'll be fine. Just drive as usual and put in 93 or 94 when you get the chance.

can't put diesel in our cars, the nozzle is too large to fit the filler opening. don't ask me how i know this.
