Believe it or not, Mercedes is seriously thinking about bringing the smart to the USA market. Very successful in Europe and Japan up to now. Check it out:

Smart is made by Mercedes and Swatch (the wrist swatch company). It is a pretty successful car and the shell of the car you can change color.
oops, let me re-phase that...it is design by Mercedes and Swatch, made is in Mercedes plant

I've actually seen a few of those cars running around Montvale, New Jersey more than a year ago.
Mercedes-Benz has it's corporate headquarter in Montvale, and we always see new models and wacky stuff like that way before they make it to any dealers.
Anyway, to me, it looks like a car that a clown should be driving.

0-62 in 18s is not safe to merge in HW... That is would be ruled illegal.. Nuts, unsafe....
Worse, a Top speed of 84 MPH... so basically you can not pass anything doing 65+ on the HW....
This car if ever being sold in US woulld be banned from HW...

I am sure Merc would introduce a stronger engine for the USA. But I would not think a...much...stronger engine.
I wonder how much would this cost if it made it here. It is not cheap in Europe. It starts at $8500 or so. But a fully loaded one is about $12,000.

I now have a new M3 (smg) and I also picked up a Ford Escape 4x4 for my winter transportation.
Oh, also-- I saw the new G35 coupe at the NY Auto Show and think it's a stunning car. It might just be my next car.

You guys have IT ALL WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you go to the MBZ site, you will see that this car is given to you when you buy one of the new "S" class benzo's!!!!!! You don't get a spare tire or roadside assistance. You just grab this car out of the trunk and drive to your final destination!!!!!!

Maybe when the price of gas is over $5US a gallon these cars will be more appreciated. Seems the trend in America at least is SUV's as big as your garage that consume 3 gallons per mile. How much of the world's oil is consumed in North America? Why? I love the SMART cars, they'd be a great solution in the cities, where you're stuck in wall to wall traffic and don't need 300hp or sub 6-second 0-60 times.

If you're "wearing" the car, you ARE the airbag.
Something tells me that thing would never be approved for sale in Caifornia at least (like the Yugo and small-engine versions of many cars).

It wouldn't last long in Texas with all the "Good O'l Boys" driving pick up trucks and SUV's down here. The drivers would have a real short life span. I don't believe in suicide.

you don't tow that little Benz you have you and a couple buddies throw it in the back of a pickup .
besides If i got one It would look like a NFL linemen in a clown car(I'm 6 ft 4 300 lbs). Like everyone said If you even get hit at low speed(like 25-35 MPH) as small as that car is if you get hit by Expedition or Escalade(some big SUV or pickup) your gonna be in the hospital for awhile (atleast) if not dead

The town that I work for just purchased a few of these and is leasing them to the town residences, But the ones we have say Ford smart. They are electrical and are used to travel between your home and the communter train lot. The outside of the car feels like a rubbermaid garbage can.
They are cute- At least it's a step in the right direction.

I saw a lime green one the other day on the 405N near Irvine this past week....BLAH! I merged in back of them and saw that it was a merc...omg that thing was ugly! The worker, it was a dealer car, driving it thought he was the king of the world driving at 65 in the carpool....he and his passenger were staring at me as I passed him. That merc coupe is looking better and better with every one of these cars that they pump out.

I wouldn't buy that fruit mobile if it only cost $1000. I'd consider it for $500 and then only to strip that ridiculous egg off the top and make my own body over the frame and drivetrain.
The green roadster looked pretty cool though.

I saw one parked here (New Orleans) over Mardi Gras. I think that is would be a great car for a very limited market: downtown locations. Parking here in the French Quarter is impossible, as any other big city. The Smart car would really only be useful for messengers and people living downtown. I saw it parked against the curb facing it (and with an illegal parking citation) even though it fit (it is as long as most cars wide).
Also, I think that MB bought out the 50% stake of Swatch a few months ago.
