leaded vs. unleaded gas

I went to Sears Point Raceway yesterday, for the motorcycle races and they have a 76 gas station there. They had competition 110 octane leaded gas. I'm just curious whats the difference between leaded and unleaded. The highest unleaded octane they had was 100, I think. That cost $4 something, and the 110 octane cost $7 something.

Leaded gasoline is higher octane.. I think the lead actually is the octane boost. But I thought it had been banned for road use... atleast in the USA.

Problem with it. It had some health side effects... as lead pretty much is a poison.

Also if you are using a catalytic converter... the leaded fuel will end up causing trouble and ruining the cat.

Besides that I can't really think of much else. I know I used 95 Octane leaded fuel a couple of years ago.... hehe but not in this country.

Here's an article with more info. Don't use leaded gas in the CL (or any new car).

Ever wonder why Japanese cars in Japan post such good times and HP rating and etc.? Their gas is still leaded.

I believe the U.S. regulated the car industry to begin using cat converters in 1973. If I recall correctly, leaded gas was banned from street use (for all cars) in the early-1980's.

If you run leaded gas in a car with a cat converter, it WILL cause MAJOR damage. Leaded fuel does not burn clean enough and cannot endure the amount of back-pressure a cat converter produces.

Motorcycles don't have cat converters.
