Kart racing

There is a new place in the S.F. Bay Area that is a must. WWW.speedring.org.
Indoor go karts. This is NOT some Disneyland ride. These are 50MPH go karts.
For $20.00 you get..... a full race suit, flame hood, gloves, helmet, neck brace. You get 12 minutes on the track with about 10 other drivers in the heat. You also get a print out of your race after your done. I usually get 22 laps in 12 minutes.
It is a blast.............

I was there yesterday, and some chick went head on full speed into the wall. I think she was OK but she only got 2 laps in. Caused us to run 12 laps under full course yellow.

FYI, not pertinent to the relative safety of Speedring (and I *seriously doubt* 50mph indoors; the closer you are to the ground, the faster the perceived speed)...

Go-kart racing (you know, the stepping stone that prepares young pro racers for F1, Indy, CART, NASCAR, etc.) is rated as the 5th most dangerous amateur sport by life insurance companies. Here is the full listing:

Most Dangerous Sport-->Risk Factor

1. Powerboat racing -->15
2. Ocean yacht racing -->10
3. Cave diving -->7
4. Spelunking(cave exploration) -->6
5. Karting tied with drag racing(not the comparatively rinky-dink street-car-type) -->5
7. Microlyte(powered hang-glider) -->4
8. Hang gliding tied with mountaineering(see Vertical Limit; exaggerated, but it's one of the few sports you can freeze solid to a vertical wall not to be discovered for decades or centuries to come) tied with motor racing -->3

12 laps under a full course yellow huh? Sounds just like a NASCAR race! Seriously, I wish we had something like that around here. Karting is huge in Europe, that is where the Michael Schumachers of the world start before graduating to F1 if they are 1)rich & well sponsored; and, 2) phenomenonally talented.

there's one of those indoor karting places near where i live. my friends and i went there. it costs a lil bit more tho $70/per person for about 40 minutes of driving. you get 5 practice laps... then 20 qualifying laps... then 40 for the final run. i think the top speed on those things were around 40. the whole activity was kinda costly but it was fun and something different. the best thing was you can drive against your friends for bragging rights...

Naw, you don't have to go as far as resorting to a kart to keep up with us around the corners. In case you didn't know:

1. Acceleration - karts can run the gamut from 60lb/hp to 7.5lb/hp. Compare that to the 13-15lb/hp for the IS300/CL-S. A fast kart will obliterate just about anything short of a sportbike in acceleration on a track. (Karts don't work well at all on the street, with tiny diameter slicks and no suspension.)

2. Cornering - RWD, slicks, no suspension = absolute terror on a track (remember, this is where professional racing looks for its young talent), but not workable on the street.

3. Top speed - the top speed of the fastest karts will top out at around 130mph. But being that you sit very low the sensation of speed is ridiculously exaggerated the closer you are to the ground, top speed in a kart feels like the Trekkie proverbial "warp factor 10".
