That ceramic coating is basically a cut off shield. Without that, the light would glare terribly.
Thats the thing that HIDs in non-HID reflectors dont have, and why they glare so much.

Didn't want to start a new topic...
Hi everyone. Complete Newb on this site.
Have an 03 3.2CL Type S 6-Speed Navi Black on Black. Love it so far. Super reliable.
So have factory HID ( I THINK they all do, but just making sure)
Anyhoo....One side comes up then flickers out. All things point to = BULB OK / IGNITOR BAD
My question is....
Anybody know a cheap place to buy an Ignitor, or....
If I just buy a new aftermarket HID kit will it work ok or does it need the ignitor replaced anyway?
I've put HID's on to other cars (and scooters---don't laugh)
but everything was fine before hand.
Does the ignitor have to be on to signal the HID ballasts to fire??
Or is that replaced with the aftermarket kit?
Sorry for the newb question if it's been posted. I spent as much time looking for it as I could for being this drunk right now HAHA!!
Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!!

^ did you read this thread? It has the answer to your problems. Buy the kit people mention and splice it in. The kit you buy replaces your oem ballast/ignitor and comes with bulbs. The oem ones are prone to moisture getting it and killing them.
My passenger side is out too.

Did my complete conversion this past weekend (driver side went out and only passenger was working). One tip--Make sure you check clearances when running your cables out of the headlight assembly. I got lucky and happened to drill holes in the right place and didn't think twice about it until I took them back out to the car to secure them in.
Kit works great and much cheaper than going the OEM ballast replacement route; however, it was a bit more work then just a plug in play but still relatively easy work.
I have a WORKING passenger side ballast for sale- PM me if interested.

Back to a MT!
So I finally get it... the ballast has a 9006 connector on it which is why the harness is needed. Since I didn't order one through them, it seems to be a pretty standard item. I'm thinking something like this would work It has 18AWG wire and the lamp are only pulling 3A so would seem it would get the job done. Anyone done this or have thoughts?

Hey guys, just purchased an 03 CLS6. I'm also having the same problem with the ballast. Looking into purchasing this kit, looks pretty simple to get them to work. Just wanted a little input on the 35w vs 55w. I had 55w in my RSX highs, and never had a problem. Would 55w be too much for low beams?

I'd have to have someone else chime in on that. I couldn't say as I don't have first hand experience.
The housing would be another concern for me as it's only designed for the heat of a 35w bulb. Might need to up the amp of the fuse too. And when you do that, the wires will get hotter.

We've ALWAYS mounted the ballast underneath the headlamp assembly itself in the stock ballast location and using the extended lead Morimoto ballasts, run the lead back into the dust cover and reconnect the igniter to the bulb there. It's generally easier if you notch the dust cover from the edge inwards just enough so that the leads can pass through while allowing the dust cover to be reinstalled. Also,be sure and use electric grease on all connections INCLUDING the igniter itself where it contacts the hid bulb terminals. That's where the failures generally begin at is the igniter. Morimoto bulbs and ballast are great for being non-oem parts but take the extra precautionarys or else they will fail quickly.
Good luck
