Cutting springs is dangerous. Hopefully you won't take anyone else out when you loose control.

4pumped: Really, cutting stock springs is just about the worst thing you can do to your suspension. Does Tom2, Jens and gavriil have to chime in too for you take our word?

Just wait till you get your hydros, or buy racing springs. DO NOT cut your stock springs. This is a 30K car..I personally would not do that to my car.

I say go for it. Start conservatively in the cutting. If it sucks, just get aftermarket springs. Give me a shout if you want help.

DONT CUT THE SPRINGS.

It fucks up the ride, you'll regret it later!

Please don't do it.

The only cut springs that I have ever seen that looked ok, were for racing applications. They were too long, and they got a nice cut and grind to allow them to fit the spring perch and cushion perfectly.

The only other "cut" springs that are even close, are those that have been cut, tempered, and tested.

They make some really good springs out there, and cut springs can mess your suspension up.

For example, if you cut an end wrong, it can easily puncture a spring perch with that open coil that was cut at the top or bottom.

It is your car, but....

i wouldn't do it at all, and would just buy springs, but if your on a budget. . .

few of my friends have cut 2 coils to 4 with no problems, and the ride would be similar, but not the same, to those that have purchased springs. .

one actually heated his springs to lower it, and it was bouncy like !@#$. .

. This is another terrible terrible way to do does it only bounce like hell it also changes the molecular structure of the spring causing to become brittle or break of excessive up and down movement of the spring.

i agree. and although the car is lower, it's pretty rediculous watching it bounce 10x over a little bump. very dangerous i might add.

That sounds like the old "Cut the springs with the welding torch trick." You nailed the problem right on the head. A cut or heated spring, should actually be reheated or annealed by heating it to blue color and "quenching" the spring in oil, water, or other substance. This causes the molecules to re-align properly and make sure that the original red-hot metal that cooled to form brittle crystals, are now more resilient.

I've seen more than a few broken springs that got "torched." Of all of the ways to "cut" a spring, that has to be the worst way off all.

I got ST srings on my accord and I cut it 3 3/4 coils in the front and 3 1/2 coils in the back cause I wanted the slammed look. I got 16inch rims and they tuck, can't even fit 17's. Needless to say my accord bouced like a b****. On the freeway going 30 or 40mph my car would bouce like it had hydos in it and people would stare like a mf. A coke can laying sideway would just roll along the bottom of my car. It's still cool to me, I don't have no problems with the car mechanically.

Hmmm... I checked the make of your car, but perhaps you should have some buddies follow you when your packed with your crew.

I was following one guy that was slammed, in a CRX, and there were 4 people in the car on the freeway (170 FRW near Burbank). The sparks coming off the car were so bright, that cars behind this joker were moving two lanes over; I think they thought they were going to get lit-up.

Good luck and say your prayers at night -- I really hope you're ok.

I sold my accord coupe 8 months when I bought my CL. But your right I never let anyone sit in the back of my car since four people would make it too low. But I never considered it dangerous to drive. I have a 96 integra and it is lowered but I'm thinking of cutting it also, just not that low. My CL is also lowered, I never had any problems with drop cars. As long as you know how to drive them it isn't dangerous.

Man... that's a really bad idea for all the reasons already mentioned.
Just wait until you get the real springs.

I've cut so many springs in my time it doesn't scare me the least bit. As far as ride quality goes...the reason people's cars are so bumpy when they cut the springs is because they fail to cut the bump stop. Fred, I'd love to take you for a ride in my car after I cut the springs. You can be my witness that cut stocks springs ride really nice. I'm hoping to get a 4" drop in the front, maybe 4.5 in the back. We'll see. I'll post pics Monday. Take care folks.

i think that's why some people are experiencing bouncy rides with the comptechs, or any springs for that matter, since their bumpstops aren't cut, or cut enough. my ride is not bouncy.

Remember, he said this was just a *temporary* setup til the hydraulics were installed. What's wrong with a little experimentation in the name of trial and error? Worst-case scenario is that the ride is a little bouncy for a few months or that aftermarket springs are installed if it's really bad.
