VSA has no effect on gas mileage, whether turned on or off.

I've heard that with VSA off you use MORE gas. Many people have said this. Check past threads...

Through my own highly unscientific tests I think turning VSA off can slightly increase gas mileage. I always turn it off in town and I tend to get 21mpg on average. With it on, only 18-19mpg. Here is a very simplified theory on this:

If you floor it, the first thing that happens is more fuel leaves the gas tank so it can be sprayed into the injectors (yeah, I know it's not exactly that simple). At this point, the gas might as well be considered used even though it hasn't been turned into forward motion yet. If VSA is on, and traction is lost, power is cut. But the gas has already left the tank. So where does the fuel that would normally be used to make the car go forward go?? I don't know where it goes, but I know it does not go back into the tank and I don't think it's "saved" for lack of a better word. It would seem that some of the gas has to be "wasted" as it's not turned into forward motion either by moving the car or spinning the wheels. If VSA is off, then the gas is still used except that the wheels spin. Even when the wheels spin, you're still going forward a little as traction is not always 100% lost. I guess what I'm trying to say is that in some situations when VSA is on, some gas leaves the tank, but due to the power being cut, some of it is not used. I don't see how this (very small) amount of fuel can be used. And hence is why I think it can decrease gas mileage a little bit.

But like I said... this is just a theory and I'm certainly no engineer.

the fuel system is pressurized. the tank fuel pump just runs all the time to keep the line full and a fuel pressure regulator reduces the line pressure to that required by the injectors. when vsa kicks in the injectors slow down, less fuel is removed from the line. the fuel isn't lost, it simply remains in the line (under pressure).

Why do you keep VSA off? What are the advantages? Certainly not to save a few bucks in gasoline if that turns out to be true. What happens if you get in an accident w/o VSA, when VSA would have saved you? or does it not work that well?

I don't see ANY advantages to VSA whatsoever. I've driven this car (with VSA on) fast enough in the twisties to scare the crap out of myself. I've driven it fast enough to drift it. I've driven it fast enough to plow the front end so bad I nearly went off the road. And I've NEVER EVER seen the VSA light flash at me like it was doing it's job. As far as I'm concerned the system is completely worthless. The traction control works, but VSA doesn't do jack shit. I've consistently gotten better gas mileage with it off. Why would I use it??

Tried turning VSA on and off with a few tanks -- no difference.

I know for a fact that it works when it really senses that one wheel is in ice/water/rock dust. When the rear end came flying out on some rocks, water, and ice, I did the counter steer, and butt-save work -- not the VSA.

I also notice that it gets cranky and flips out when climbing steep curves with lots of 2 and 3 inch rocks on the road. It cuts the power back, but no light comes on. Only happens in certain areas.

So, leave it off if your just driving around in normal weather, it may save a little gas -- it's possible (or at least seems logical).

I would leave it on if it got really nasty out (like the first rain of the summer).

It is only Acura's way of telling us that they think we are too stupid to make "command" decisions. I think it falls into that no 2-1 and 1-2 SS mode, since they think we would trash the tranny.

Next time, add some extra code to the CPU, and after we sign a waiver, let us run in "non-dummy" mode.

NO gas saving here. The same, I have tried it for a full tank. I thought I got a little more mileage with it ON. so I think there is no noticeable a different.
