Is it 3 or 5? I saw the new 5 series but the trunk is very ugly.

I test drove a new 530i yesterday. I went with my manager to look at the X5, and they had a demo 530 sitting next to the X5. I was checking it out and the sales rep asked if we wanted to take it out for a spin. Overall, it drives very nicely and feels very robust, but I can't get over the styling and I hate the interior. It feels too angular and just plain strange. Not very inviting or comforting at all. The iDrive is just plain annoying also.

BTW, they had 12+ 5 series sitting in the lot. I asked the guy if they were selling well. He said "sales actually have been far below expectations for our dealership, but I blame it on the economy". Yeah right!

BTW, the X5 was sweet and the new for 04 hill crawl feature was pretty cool. They had a demo X3 sitting on the lot which he let us sit inside. Very nice truck and felt very similar in both size and appearance to the X5. Overall we were both impressed.

Last thing. They had a 525 sitting on the lot with crappy rims and overall looked plain cheap for a sticker price of $43,500!!!! Who in their right mind would pay that much $$ for a car that could get beaten by a 4 cylinder Accord?

One more thing... They had a used M5 sitting in the dealership. It's sad to see the new 5 series next to the older version. The old version looks so stately, solid and overall just more attractive. Same with the interior.

I know it was an M5, but it was just a much nicer car IMO. The new 5 series looks plain cheap on the outside compared to the old version and the interior is just weird.

The used M5 was selling for $69,000, but it only had 8,000 miles on it and looked showroom new. Anyone want to lend me $70k???

Last thing. I absolutely HATE the headlights of the new 5 series in person. They look like eye brows for some reason.

I don't know who's more whacked, Bangle or the execs that approved his design for production

ken

ive been thinking the same thing

i saw a what i thought was a new 7 series on the highway last week but as i creeped up to it it was the new 5 series. when i saw the pics of the 5 series i thought it was a bland looking car but seeing one in person has changed my perspective!

that car could possibly be my next car as well...

When you buy a 44k car, you ain't worried about an appliance like the Accord.

I just can't get over the looks. The last 5 was PERFECT, IMO, so it was hard to improve. Maybe they should have went evolutionary instead of revolutionary.

All these new BMWs look like old Mercury "New Edge Styling" discontinued Cougars to me.

The new 5 is ok, I wouldn't call it downright gorgeous though.....the interior is the biggest letdown imho.

In a dark color, just like the 7series, the 5 looks pretty good (hides any of the weird lines).

Problem is that the car is expensive, the only one worth considering is the 545 Sport (maybe the 530 if you don't care about speed). Go build one on BMWUSA and see what it comes out to. Prices went up 6% from the E39, that's a big jump.

The 645 is cool, just really pricey.

Yes it was the one at Oak Park Mall. I didn't care much for it on paper either, till I saw one in person. Much, much nicer. Of course it was locked so I didn't get to sit in it which I'm hearing on here that the interior is not the greatest. Well, it's a start....gotta find something for next year since Acura ain't doing it for me.

My wife works at a dealership in California, here we blamed the tripling of the registration fees , which have been repealed.

I did not like the 7 at first either, but it grew on me. The 5 looks way better than the 7.

Definetly dig this new 5. It is a strong step forward for BMW. Not everyone is going to like the new thing because people are generally afraid of change until it grows on them.

This thing is just HOTT. The only way I would take the e39 over this if the price was very attractive for the old 540.

the new 5 series BMW is the "love it or hate attitude" personally i love it. most everyone i've talked to said they think it's NASTY. but the sheet metal kinda of reminds me of a Z4. (which by far is the best looking BMW in their line).

It's a good thing the fundamentals under neath that less than attrative exterior are sound because if BMW had to survive on the virtue of the styling of the latest bunch of cars they are in deep doodoo .These cars are styling FUBARS with that funky bustle butt trunk on the 7 and the melted taillight look on the 5 .Sad to see BMW take a great car and make it into this mess of bad styling .As far as Bangle goes .................SHOOT ON SIGHT !!!!! that idiot knows about as much about car styling as I do about rocket science !

The strong Euro isn't helping BMW prices either. I read that they went up almost 2% very recently. If the Euro keeps climbing, they will raise the prices even higher

You got to get the 6 series if anything Ken. That and the X5 are the only bimmers doing anything for me right now.

The only X5 that does anything for me is the 4.6is, cool color choices and is more aggressive looking than the others.

I like the 04 X5 update (4.8is should be neat), but would still get a Cayenne S over the 4.4i.

Agreed. My buddy just took me out in his Cayenne S. GOD DAMN THAT RIDE IS TIGHT. The power, brakeing and handling are better than most cars i ever been it! Funny part is that i loved how this car drove soo much but it was in the rain!! I cant wait to see what it can do on dry pavement

Oh sorry about getting offtopic

Old saying in the Navy was "The fish stinks from the head".

The former BMW chief car guy Pischetsrieder went over to VW in a huff a few years ago over not getting the CEO job and who took the helm instead? Helmut Pahnke, a guy from McKinsey Consulting. He hired Bangle. Now he reportedly has asked Chris B. to slightly redesign the 7-series' rear to take the edge off it.

If you want to get pumped up about a company's potential for great products, look what is happening at GM since Bob Lutz arrived and put the car guys back in the loop!

Saw it last week when I was bring my Acura in for service. It's really interesting how Inskip is setup. I can see BMW's to my right and Infiniti's to my left when I walk in to the Acura dealership Definitely not the place to go if you ever get buyers remorse.

You know what I like about the new 5-series?? It makes the last generation more affordable. Now, if I can locate a 2002 M5 for under $45k, I'll be in business.
