I recommend the "mid-muffler mod" to anyone looking for a louder but classy sound:
To those of you who want to make your CL louder but not "ricey", I highly recommend removing the Mid-Muffler. Honestly, the Axelbacks barely sound any louder than stock, BUT they DO change the tone of your car and are still an important thing to have. Most of you already know what a Mid-Muffler is, but to those who don't, a Mid-muffler is a second muffler on the CL that is located in the Middle of your exhaust. NOTE: This is not the tail muffler. The only purpose of this Mid-Muffler is to reduce the sound of the car.
Removing it (with the addition of having aftermarket axelbacks), creates a loud, but smooth sound that DOES NOT sound "ricey", but sounds "Mean and Classy".
If you want to do this there are only 2 STEPS:
1.) Go to a muffler shop and have them cut the mid-muffler out and away.
2.) Once they cut it out, have them replace the location with a piece of straight piping.
NOTE: This is NOT "Straight-piping your car", Thaat is when people replace their rearrr mufflers with piping.
Below, I have 2 pictures of what this is (NOTE: these are pictures i found, too lazy to get my camera out on my car).
This is how it sounds on my car, (Sound quality of the video camera is not the best):

StreetKA is right on the ball. The mid-muffler is what was removed, it's the closest to the rear mufflers and it's what I removed.
Rajca, as stated in the beginning of my thread, the pictures posted were just examples and were not taken from a CL.
EDIT: ^just saw your post

I have my mid-muffler removed, along with the air intake resonater removed. It sounds better than stock for sure. At first I thought it sounded a little ricey, but a month later it grew on me. Also I paid the muffler shop $40 to cut out my mid-muff which I though was a bit pricey for 2 minutes worth of work, just to let others know the ball park area of what it might cost.

But my wife also saysit sounds like an out board motor in a tin boat and also its hard to hear it unless its under load

Yeah Rajca has my old setup, I drove around with the mid muffler removed and honestly didn't like it. Then i had two magnaflow racing mufflers installed and its loud as fuck. I basically said screw it im going with a JDM exhaust, and couldn't be more satisfied.
