I used to do it around 3k miles, but now Im doing every 5k. Its still a waste as Im most likely not using the entire life of the oil, but I just dont feel comfortable doing it longer due to driving conditions, the weather fluctuations the past week (70* Thursday, 30s and snow Saturday )

EDIT - Found the link http://www.8thcivic.com/forums/mecha...strong-41.html

He does 150k a year And he hit his second deer a few days ago.
shit 41 pages, but also i think for that civic is he does alot of highway miles which helps alot, which is alot easy on the oil then stop and traffic and such,

but yeah on mine, it is definetly piece of mind with all the possible variables

(prestige acura???) if a dealship i was going to say less then 50, but yeah not that expensive, and i would say it would help save you engine in the long run also, but most people never get that far cause most cars are geneally crashed and totalled by then, so kinda pointless for most people, but it would be nice to have cabin heat a little sooner though

I do a lot of hwy driving as well (i average 50k miles a year) but my car idles all day while im at work, summer/winter and every thing in between which isnt as easy as hwy miles. I still run extended changes of 15k and there is plenty life left when i change it. 3k intervals has been brainwashed into every ones heads and isnt necessary. Have your oil tested next time you change it. See what type of condition its in. You may very well change your mined. Plus it will tell you what kind of shape your motor is in. (something a mechanic could never find out due to it being broken down into parts per million of contaminants/metals in the oil)

So is it really a block heater? Or is something on the oil pan to just help keep the oil warm? I'm sure either way would help with cold starts where oil flow may be an issue in freezing weather. I don't imagine it would hurt anything. When we move to Nova Scotia I will likely have a huge garage (US Govt pays the bill) and therefore don't think I'll need one.

but i also think that you really never give a chance to let the motor actually cool down , so it does not go through as many heat cycles as most people which helps tremendisly, most people cars sit all day while they are at work in a parking lot getting cold

crank that heater up then

but anyways i think the block heater actually goes into one of the coolant passages on the block, and yeah it would still help the oil flow a little bit better in cold weather, but maybe not as much as a oil pan heater though, but still effective

i think they install it into one of the (damn just had a brain fart) (but its a plug on the block that is used to get the mold out when the make the engine) or they put it around the thermostat to keep the coolant warm, which will keep the block and oil warmer.

I have a block heater on my car.... the plug thingy is hanging out of the grille. with a nice cap on it. so you don't even see it really.

And your point would be what? so heating up just to cool while at work is harder on the oil? My car sits for 8 hrs cooling down once i get home so your point isnt really a valid one. So you say idling all day isnt severe? There are times my car (when i need to or feel like it) gets started and shut off 50+ times a day, there are days when its stop and go at 500+ houses a day with lots of quick acceleration. Either way my oil is under severe conditions. 3k is a waste. I even tested my oil once after a full day of auto x-ing and lapping at a race track thinking it may be a good idea. The oil was damn near new levels of protection!

Well this morning I started my car in 24 degree weather. I let it idle in park for a few minutes, but just all around I got the feeling the car was really straining in the cold. I don't live in the midwest or anything, and we don't get below freezing temps every day in the winter, but it still has me a bit worried

Rapture... did you throttle it hard before the motor got up to temp.

Cause if u did, (when the motor is cold u have extremely HIGH oil pressure)

giving u lots of tq/throttle response. but high end is dead. u must warm up the car for like 3 or so mins PAST the point at which the temp indicator is at full.

May this be what you are experiencing or..?

past couple of days (it's been like a week or so) have been 10 degree mornings , even starting my car at work today to come home was like 15 outside (high was 17 :cold: )(not very normal for us, it is normally quite a bit warmer) and it f***ing kills the gas mileage

Another thing that keeps me going on the 3k oil changes is that I try to keep my documentation, so if I ever want to sell the car, the buyer will see that I kept up the oil changes. So many of us have been "brainwashed" with the 3k stuff, it might be hard selling a car to some people if you had the oil changed every 5k or 7k or whatever.

yeappp..... stubborn we are.

I'll never go even close to 5K miles on one changes, but thats just me.

for like 20$ i like the piece of mind (it's about $20 more to do an early change if u calculate all the extra changes u'll end up doing).

and not often can u buy piece of mind for that cheap.

Mutiple cars honda's and VW's and have always used a 5k or a 7K interval without any problems to the engines.

lol I was just about to post a picture of my dash. Showing about ~50 miles and only 3/4 full tank. I filled the tank on Friday, didn't do a whole lot of driving on the weekend, but on Monday evening I went out (after work) and the fuel gauge was already at like the 2nd or 3rd notch down from the fill line. I checked for fuel leaks, but nothing.... and no, I didn't do any WOTs.

i have not even been able to do any WOT runs due to the snow/ice on the roads (and idiot drivers) (it just spins instead), but it is going to suck when i lose all the extra power from the cold temps

The CLS engine is great, & doesn't need frequent oil changes.
Now a lesser engine is a different story.
x2 I abuse the hell out of my car on a daily basis lol. I change it every 3000-3500k I buy the oil and filter from the acura dealer since I get a discount. I switched to 5w30 to help with the slight valve train noise after I hit over 100k miles.
