Ive seen clogged drain tubes leak water onto the carpet under the dash. Definately check them again. You can always pull the headliner down and have someone spray the car down while you are inside it to see where the water is coming from, but dropping the headliner is a pain in the ass.
If you open your sunroof all the way and look towards the front of the car inside the sunroof in the same corner where the water is coming from, you can see the exit tube for the drainage.
and my car doesnt go over 3k on a daily bases either. Although I have revved it to vtec in the 3+ years i've owned it, probably on average a few times a year but never redlined though. Dont need to rev that high on my daily drive and it becomes a waste of gas/wear on the engine, thats how i feel.
Agree, most of my driving is from highway driving which is where this car excels. The transmission is probably the best and worst feature of this car-its gearing really allows for low-rpm cruising. Even at 80mph, it still revs only 2300rpm. That is even lower than my 1998 Camaro LS1...(I had that since new too but I never drive it. Do not even like to. Only 3XXX miles!)
I was thinking of buying a friend's 1997 Honda Prelude-Automatic. He is selling for only $3800. Does not have many mods fortunately, except for a black hood. I know these too have transmission problems but other than that, would anyone know of any other concerns Preludes might have? (Besides the likelihood of being stolen)
my bro has a 97 prelude auto and it's a reliable car for sure... it's at 300000 kms... burns a lot of oil if you floor it.....nothing aside from that though
214,000 and change on my 2001 CL-S.
Just replaced all the coils, had three go within two weeks. Still on my second transmission. I agree just change fluid don't flush. I uses less than 1/2 Qt of oil between changes (Mobil 1 @5000 miles since new). Still love it comfortable, fast.
would you guys recommend to flush the engine? im runing mobil 1 since own it. the guy where i usually go to do oil change he is telling me that i have to do that bc i have dirty oil. what do you guys think? im at 81k
Flushing oil is a waste of time and money, if you do regular changes <5k miles there should be no problem. The new oil will clean out most of the old gunk.
when my valve covers were pulled at my 105k service to adjust the valves, they were very clean, no sludge at all. Synthetic oil helps, I heard pennzoil platnium does a good job of cleaning. Im going 8k intervals.
I had a question but did not want to start a new thread at the risk of boiling the ocean...ie-discussing something already discussed many times and then looking stupid...
Today, it was raining hard and when I went to my car, I was shocked to notice my headliner dripping wet. Around the part where the plastic of the A-Pillar meets the fabric headliner is where it is dripping the most. I could not find any obvious signs of damage on the outside roof panels for which water could penetrate. Wondering...whether anyone knows the cause of this problem?
Whats the difference between flushing the transmission fluid and just changing it? Thanks.
A flush actually pushes a chemical cleaner through the system to get out all the gunk while just changing it (what most quick oil change shops do although they still call it a flush and charge you the price of one) just puts new fluid in but can leave any crap in the system. Just changing the fluid doesn't change all of it as much still remains in the torque converter and other places in the transmission after you drain it.
I have never done the 3x3 flush or even heard of them until I started following this forum. For me, a drain and refill was basically all that was done. However, I would say follow whatever the experts say because everyone's driving causes different stresses on the powertrain.
I got someone to look at the whining sound issue with my car and I was told that the EGR valve passage was clogged up. Not quite so sure that is the issue...What do you guys think? Could a clogged EGR valve passage the culprit of that whining sound?
So far, it seems like the consensus is that the transmission is the source of the whine.

no need just add 6 oz of seafoam to your oil and then drive around until your next oil change. that stuff will remove any crud pretty quick.
i wouldnt drive around too long with seafoam in the oil. Some say a couple hundred miles and some people just idle with it in the driveway for a few minutes before the oil change. but i wouldnt go 8k miles on it or anything.
Acura engineered these cars to last exactly 266,391 miles, and not one mile over. So you have about 1300 miles left before it dies.

Haha that's funny you say that. I just bought the exact same one as newbster with 270,000 and still running strong! I hope to clean it up and drive it till the wheels fall off!
Today I am happy to announce that my 2001 Acura CL Type S reached 250,000 miles!
To put things into perspective, 250,000 miles is farther than the distance from the earth to the moon and just over 10 times around the circumference of the earth.
I purchased the vehicle new over 15 years ago on May 18, 2001 with 6 miles on it.
Soichiro Honda would be proud of this achievement!
I purchased this car when I was 18 for 2,400 doll
ars with only 177,000 miles on it (or so I thought) but 2 weeks after driving it, the odometer was still at 177,000. So after I got the odometer fixed it turns out the car really had 225,000 miles on it! Anyways, 4yrs later it is still running somewhat strong with 300,194 milesand counting. Although it is a great milestone, it is starting to show signs of transmission failure, it's leaking coolant and the power steering pump needs to be replaced. I love this car but I think it is seeing it's last days on the road, we will see how long it lasts!
If memory serves me correctly, I had one done @ 11X,XXX miles (not sure the exact mileage) and the latest one @ 220,XXX. I had the dealer do this more technical service and they just said that it needed to be done so I did it. However, I have learned, now that I am doing most things on my own now, it should usually be done if you hear a ticking sound from the top of the engine...my engine has not ticked if memory serves me well so it might have been a waste of money but do not quote me on that.
Now...if we could get back to my leaky roof. It is definitely not from the sunroof because it is too far away. It is basically leaking right through the headliner by the pillar...anyone have that problem before?
BTW-I think my car tried to eat me...as I was checking the tranny fluid in the car, the hood shut on my back. Maybe the struts are getting weak or the car is simply hungry for more...
Do you remember how much $$ the valve adjustment service ran you? I am in desperate need to get rid of that nasty tick lol
I have had my 2001 Acura Cl Type S since new-way back in 2001! I have used it as an everyday car and as a road trip car. It has taken me to and back from work as well as through all of the Midwestern States. It has survived wintery blizzards, hail storms and even driven through a shallow pond...not that I think this is an off-roader but the land around my garage was flooding rapidly and I had to move it quick! No water damage inside though...
So far, nothing major has gone wrong except for recurring vibrating steering, warping brake rotors, air bag light goes on and off-lately it just stays on, the driver door sensor is wonky so when the door is open, it does not sense it and has had a habit of dining on expensive tires. It also has the "Spring Stall." The car stumbles when warm in the spring months because of the fuel we use here in the Midwest confusing the computer. Believe it or not, the transmission is ORIGINAL! I change the transmission fluid-never flushed-every other oil change. It is not that expensive really so if you want it to last long, change the transmission fluid-do not flush!!! I have only ever done whatever is recommended in the manual-nothing more and it has not been moded or raced.
How much longer do you guys think it will last? The engine runs as strong as it has always and the transmission shifts fine. I have noticed a whine that has developed-it happens when driving on the highway...seems to be coming from the engine. Sounds like a spaceship now...but nothing in terms of driving has changed...just the same old trusty Acura.
Hi I am new to the forum and just bought my first Acura , 2003 cl s 6mt. Mine has 227k and going strong i have a few mods but nothing too crazy. Like I said this is my first Acura but in the past i have had Honda Accords and my last one still ran great when i got rid of it at 430k! I did have to replace the transmission at 410k but who can complain after that many miles!! Anyway i hope these cars are on par with the reliabilityof the Accord. So far so good this thing ROCKS!! The 6 speed is a sweet ride!

if I can go up to 325k miles I'll be a happy camper!
I'm impressed! When I bought my CL it had 85k on it and I only expected it to last me a few years. I'm up to 170k but am about to cry uncle ... the new engine mounts would be a couple grand. Had to put in a new transmission about five years ago. But I still think it's a beautiful car.

All in all, doing things like putting in motor mounts, front axles, front control arms, and rear hubs, along with the occasional radiator or transmission is still much less expensive than buying a new car. To some of us it is a small price to pay to drive a great, and increasingly rare car.
My 2001 CL type S just hot 280,000 miles! I replaced my O2 sensor today and its still purring like a champ. It literally runs like a champ, with no problems at all (mechanically). Believe it or not it still has the OG tranny with no rebuilds or anything and it still shifts strong! Im thinking I will get 350-400 thousand miles out of this CL. We will see......
