How do you know your breaks are bad?

How do you know your breaks are bad?
I hear people say that their breaks become bad, and people re-surface them and change pads.
How would I be able to say my breaks are bad?
My car stops fast when I lightly apply breaks, but the process of slowing down is not as smooth as it used to be.
What are the first signs of bad breaks to look for?

ok let's see...there are a number of signs...i'll list a few:
1. squeeling sounds when u apply brakes
2. shuddering vibrations/knocking coming through the steering wheel
3. this one sounds more confusing than it actually is: if u hear that the car makes more road noise when u're stopping - it's kinda like u can physically hear the pads rubbing against the disk that produces almost like a grinding sound, but it's not a metal on metal grinding like u may think...u'll know it when u hear/detect it
a little birdie told me that when u go in for your next service, tell them that u get bad vibrations coming from the steering wheel when braking from like 30 MPH and faster...tell them that u are a member of this forum and that it was suggested by members of this board who include mechanics to replace the pads with the newer pads that i believe are a bit softer and more responsive. if they do not comply, come back here and do a search on the upgraded pads...if u can't find any topics, most anyone can help u find one. good luck.

it's not that the old ones were defective...i think the newer ones won't give u as much negative feedback when u use them b/c they're a bit softer...depending on how many miles u have on your car, u might have to insist that the car doesn't feel right when u're routinely stopping...tell them that the steering wheel jiggles when u're stopping and that people on this forum have discussed this issue before and found out there were newer pads that alleviated this problem...what's the worst thing that can happen?? they say no??

Scooter,
I am having a problem dealing with Mike. A defective rear bumper was installed after an accident and Mike did not want to replace it. I had to get Ken Grant involved. Mike said that Acura CLS's have no problems with brake rotors. The problem is caused by the way drivers drive these cars. He does not want to install the teflon tape for the sunroof rattle, but used grease.
