Honda Thrives Despite Recession

Honda Thrives Despite Recession
January 2, 2002

Bucking industry trends, Honda is posting double-digit sales gains in Japan while in the U.S. its sales are up 3.9% through November although overall industry sales are down 1.8%.

Part of the secret of Honda's trend-defying performance is its "small is smart" approach to car design, according to a story in the Asian Wall Street Journal. But the ultimate reasons for Honda's success is both the U.S. and Japan: sporty styling and a top-notch reputation for quality, especially in engines.
In Japan, Honda's on a hot streak with smaller, cheaper and more fuel-efficient vehicles while in the U.S., although small cars such as the Civic are selling well, Honda's biggest boost has come from adding the Acura MDX sport-utility vehicle to its light-truck lineup.

A "critical part" of Honda's strategy is building a wide variety of vehicles on a few flexible platforms, the story said. This allows the company to share components among many vehicles and cut costs. Platform sharing is nothing new, but Honda's lineup is built on just five platforms. By comparison, Toyota has about 30 and even the much-smaller Mazda has at least nine, the WSJ reported.
