Honda AirBag Recall?? Does it effect our CLs

After reading this article and the years of the cars effected and how similar so many of the parts were, does anyone think that this effects our cars?

This issue is not the same as the OPDS sensor that was fixed on so many of our cars already.

Tue Feb 9, 7:22 pm ET

DETROIT – Honda Motor Co. is adding more than 378,000 cars to an existing safety recall for air bag inflation problems, the company said Tuesday.

The company will replace the driver's side air bag inflator on the cars because they can deploy with too much pressure, causing the inflator to rupture and injure or kill the driver.

The recall now affects more than 822,000 vehicles, including certain 2001 and 2002 Accord sedans, Civic compacts, Odyssey minivans, CR-V small sport utility vehicles and some 2002 Acura TL sedans.

Honda said it is aware of 12 incidents linked to the problem, with 11 injuries and one death. The company said it is not aware of any problems happening after July 2009.

"However, we have concluded that we cannot be completely certain that the driver's air bag inflator in the vehicles being added to this recall at this time will perform as designed," Honda said in a statement.

Honda's announcement comes at a time of increased attention on automotive recalls. Though the problems are unrelated, rival Toyota Motor Corp. in the process of recalling more than 8 million cars and trucks due to faulty gas pedals. On Tuesday, Toyota said it would recall more than 440,000 of its flagship 2010 Prius hybrids due to a braking glitch.

"There is a heightened sensitivity right to anything to do with recalls," said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda.

Honda originally announced the recall to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in November of 2008, involving fewer than 4,000 2001 Accords and Civics, the company said. The recall was expanded in July of 2009 to 440,000 vehicles including the 2001 and 2002 Accord and Civic, as well as certain 2002 Acura TL sedans.

Worldwide, Honda has recalled about 514,000 vehicles globally due to the airbag problem. The company said it would make issue a press release at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Tokyo (9 p.m. Tuesday EST) about how many vehicles are affected worldwide by the latest recall expansion.

Company officials said the airbag produces too much pressure that can cause the inflator to rupture, sending metal fragments toward the driver.

Honda says owners should take their vehicles to dealerships as soon as they are notified by the company in writing. Notification will begin during the month of February.

not sure if its the media, but the media cant make up factory recalls when honda issues the recall. but the media can make it sounds as bad as it can, and its not exactly the golden years for japanese automakers.

bet my friend is happy he got an altima though lol

well us car savy guys know to just drop it in to neutral and pull off to the side of the road so I wouldnt be worried it either.
Just let your wife know the proper procedure so she wont freak out if it happens.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Honda announced it is expanding a previously announced recall to replace an airbag inflator in an additional 379,000 U.S. vehicles.

In a statement posted on its Web site late Tuesday, Honda said the driver's airbag inflators in these certain vehicles may expand with too much pressure, which can cause the inflator casing to break and could result in injury or death.

The original recall involving this issue happened in July 2009, and it included 2001 and 2002 Accords and Civics as well as some 2002 model year Acura TL vehicles, a Honda spokesman told CNNMoney.com.

The recall expansion affects 2001 and 2002 Accord, Civic, Odyssey, CR-V, and selected 2002 Acura TL vehicles, the statement said. Honda said there have been 12 incidents related to the airbag inflator problem.

One Honda Pilot car and one Acura CL vehicle may also be affected, the spokesman said.

Although none of the reported problems occurred after July 2009, Honda said it was still expanding the recall because it could not be sure that the inflators in the aforementioned vehicles would work correctly.

Honda said it will notify affected customers by mail and phone with instructions on how to have their vehicles inspected and updated at an authorized dealer. The entire production of each of the models in question is not necessarily included in the recall.

Last month, Honda announced a separate recall of 646,000 2007 and 2008 Fit, City and Jazz models worldwide, after a fire hazard involving a power window switch resulted in a death in South Africa.
http://money.cnn.com/2010/02/09/auto...dex.htm?hpt=T2

The "One Acura CL vehicle may affected" is pretty vague.

This comment cracked me up, haha. My dad said the exact same thing but he took it a step further and said it was the American government who rigged certain foreign cars and put them out there so people would lose faith in the foreign car market. Btw, they have a camry

Also, this makes me wonder about when my wife got into a head on accident in her 2002 CL. There was no passenger in the car but that airbag went off also when I didn't think it should have because the sensor was suppose to detect that.

No. They will send you something in the mail about it if it affects your car even if you aren't he original owner. I got recall notices for a 10 year old vehicle when I was the 3rd owner and had never given Ford notice that I was the new owner.

Well that definitly sounds like a plus.
Do they have a time frame ever to send out notices for those affected by the recall.

Honda has put out big money on their recalls for cars in the early 2000s. Between the trannys, opds sensor and now this air bag recall, that is a ton of money for the dealerships.

I wonder if this opens themselves to lawsuits for other people in the past who have been in accidents with one of these recalled cars and were hurt from the airbag and didn't think it was out of the norm. After reading this recall, I wonder how many new court cases might be opened due to a faulty airbag.

03s have the dual stage airbag so thats why the 03 bags arent interchangable with the 01/02s.

LOL at the one CL. I wonder which lucky CL owner is gonna get that letter

Shouldn't we all get something done for free from the dealership or some kind of credit. Yes we get our cars fixed which was due to their negligence in the first place but what about the hassle and inconvenience and lost time by taking my car to the dealership and spending 4 hours out of my day.

I want a free case of transmission fluid, a free set of car mats or a valve adjustment!! The dealerships sure charge you for every minute of their time, I'm thinking of doing the same thing.

My yearly salary/hours in a year = Rate

Rate X number of hours it takes them to fix this recall = Compensation.

I talked to Acura on the phone they told me the Acura CL in CANADA is NOT affected by this problem.

ONLY some in the US have been flagged as needing a air bag replacement.

ONLY ELs and TLs in CANADA could potentially have this problem.

a lil FYI
