Honda Acura reformulated manual transmission fluid
I know this has already been covered but I wanted to share my experience with the family. As you should already know, Honda Acura came out with a new MT fluid recommended for all sticks new and old. It is supposed to be better in every way as well as help with cold shifting.
Acura P/N: 08798-9031A
Honda P/N: 08798-9031
Both the new Honda and Acura fluids are the same so you can use either P/N for either Make. The bottle is gray and has a white cap.
As most of you know I just had my transmission completely rebuilt. New gears, clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, and many other parts. When this was done two months ago I informed the Acura tech of the new fluid and he said he was not aware of it and that he would look into it. After reading the P/N for the old MT fluid and finding it on the parts list for the invoice from the trans rebuild I realized the Acura tech put the old formulation in anyway.
When I put the new parts on the car last week I went by the local Honda dealer and picked up 3 quarts of the new reformulated MT fluid. We drained the old fluid, gold color like oil, added the new fluid, clear and light pinkish, very different. The second the dropped the car off the lift and I drove it I noticed a HUGE improvement. I have had the new fluid in for over a week now and COLD shifting is slick, regular shifting is even more smooth, everything about the manual is more precise now. The car has NEVER shifted this well, even when my car was new and had only 50 miles on it. I highly recommend this as a upgrade to anyone with a Honda Acura MT. This is great stuff and even if you don’t need a trans fluid flush I highly recommend flushing the old and putting in the new formula.

Back to a MT!
The new formula seems to be better. I think my car shifts a little smoother and its easier to put into first when coming up to a stop sign. Overall I'm happy I put it in.

i put mine in yesterday (first time changing tranny fluid and possibly last time too) and it shifted really smooth for the first mile or so, but then slowly got less and less smooth. i cant quite say that it's the same as before, but i can safely say that it was not worth the $7 a bottle, even after the guy at the dealership gave me a $2/bottle discount.

I just had the new fluid put in last week...Acura dealer didn't have it, but Honda did....anyway, it is definitely smoother going into 2nd gear on cold days....and morning temps in MN have been below zero for the last few days, which provides the best test.

I run the Pennzoil Synchromesh. Its the same as the GM stuff, just easier to get.

There are two versions of gm syncromesh.
GM syncromesh and GM syncromesh friction modified
The frictoon modified is where its at. I ran AMSOIL MTF and it was night and day. Was like a hot knife cutting butter. If u have grinds, changjng out fluids will only bandaid it.....

Three Wheelin'
so, royal purple is 18.99 per bottle, pennzoil is 7.99 per bottle.
amsoil?
maybe one bottle of royal purple and 2 pennzoil?
it probably doesnt even matter, guess i'll just go with Pennzoil synchromesh...
Royal Purple website suggests 10w-40 hp motor oil for the manual tranny...wtf
Guess i'll just use their motor oil for my motor...lol

The regular GM stuff is part # 12345349
The friction modified is part # 12377916 (which has been supposedly succeeded by part # 10953509 )
The Pennzoil stuff is the same as the regular synchromesh, not the friction modified.
GMPartsDirect.com sells the friction modified fluid for $8 a quart, but you can only buy it by the case (6 quarts).
EDIT - GMPartsEast.com sells it for $9.50 a quart, and you buy it by the bottle, not the case.
Ive had good luck with the Pennzoil stuff. Ill probably do a drain and fill around 140k miles (i.e. - soon), at which point I may give the Amsoil stuff a try. I used to have an odd grind on the 1-2 shift at high rpms, but that could very well have been user error as Im not having that problem anymore.

Got 4 bottles of the grey/white cap MTF...drained out the old fluid that had a light beer color to it...not sure if that's the older Honda formula but it was pretty clean. Filled up the new fluid and it shifts like butter now. Very little effort in getting into the gears. I'm surprised it made that much of an improvement over my old gold colored fluid( even though it drained out really clean)
