Is High Mileage Death For The CLS6 ?
So as most of you know I've been hunting down a CLS6 for months now with not too much luck .
I've got my eye on a silver/ebony six speed with 240k on it . No lights on the dash, no vibrations, clean interior and exterior, clean title, appears to be lowered . It's about a 9 hour drive from my home. I would probably fly out there and drive it home . He wants 5700$ , what's your guys opinion ?
I know something will probably have to be replaced . Maybe a clutch or motor mount in the near future . I'm not too worried about that . Anything else that should scare me off ?
I've heard you can get a jdm engine for around $500 so the mileage doesnt scare me all that much .
Hit me with some opinipons guys

6mt swapped..smart
Ehh motors arn't the issue i'd say the trans is. Even if there is nothing wrong with it now, i'd count on at minimum a rebuild soon, but it all depends how it was driven I guess. Yes me and Mike have now both bought jdm motors for pretty cheap, but the 6 speeds are not cheap once they need replacing/rebuilding. I would offer him 5

Not death.. but its also not worth anywhere near $5,700. I would be skeptical of the owner's description of its condition until you see it in person. There are many minor issues that add up in aggregate, so I would keep looking for a lower mileage example to avoid the troubles.
(I have 255k on mine, so I am in no way negatively biased, lol)
EDIT: I wouldn't expect more than $4k for mine with its issues taken care of, and would run to the bank before the buyer came to his senses.

I personally see it being worth 5k . How much would a rebuild run in parts , labor would be done by myself and some helping hands ? I plan on replacing suspension , tires , and building the engine , clutch . Things to go fast

Shouldn't be a huge issue but that price is no good. I wouldn't pay more than about $3500-4000. Make sure he has paperwork for 2x 105k mile services. It should be on it's 3rd water pump, timing belt, timing belt tensioner, etc.

Enjoy the repairs on that. Reliability isn't their thing. My brother works at the largest volume Audi and Porsche dealership in the country. As the head of the service dept said, "You can always be sure of your job since these things aren't known for their reliability." Can't said I'd ever own one out of warranty. Same can be said for BMWs. Expensive to fix and maintain. Not known for their reliability either. My old M3 held up OK but most of the other M3 owners I know dealt with plenty of repair bills.

I was also thinking of purchasing a b5 s4, but s4's at the same price of a CLs6 are high mileage, at least 100k+. Many The turbos will most likely need to be replaced or rebuilt and that will be expensive. They have 2 lol. My brother has a audi which is somewhat expensive to maintain compared to the CLs6. My uncle owns a 98 BMW M3, which he was going to sell to me, but he told me that things constantly need to be fixed. For the value and reliability the CL just seems like a better car. Just my opinion. Good luck with the car searching.

Whats up with RDX owners?

I would never consider a BMW or Audi out of warranty unless I was swapping a non-BMW/Audi motor into it.

Are you looking for a specific color/interior combo, or within certain budget contraints? (Aren't we all). I'm pretty sure you could find a nice one with less than 150K for under 7 grand. The way I found mine was to go the craigslist in major cities. Yes it was painstaking, but you'd be suprised what you find. Also remember that the price is always negotable, especially with dealers in the winter months.

193k on mine, and it still runs like a champ. Needs some suspension work this spring (swaybar mounts, shocks), but that could be attributed to our crappy roads here.
I dont think higher mileage should scare you away, but I wouldnt buy one with more than 125k miles and lots of proven maintenance records. If I could get $5700 for my car right now I'd sell it in a heartbeat, realistically its a $3500-$4k car.

Yeah, I didnt want red that much either (but settled since it had black interior). I'd love to find a nice blue one with under 100K miles. I know its probably too far for you, but a member near Philly 03jamescls or something like that had a silver one that I wanted to buy, but he didn't get back with me when he said he would so I went a different direction. He finally called me back while I was driving back from florida with the car I bought. The last posting on his ad in the black market was back in september of last year. He probably still has the car and will negotiate down a little. There was also a blue one in DC area around this time frame. Had a few minor scrapes, and 150K or so Think he wanted $6300 or something like that. Theres a blue one in Chicago with 126K. May or may not be worth a shit. Piced at $6900 on autotrader. Good Luck. Plane tickets are cheap, and a drive across the country is alot of fun.

Definitely try not to settle, but remember it is a used car, so you have to compromise a little on color. I ordered mine brand new, but otherwise Aegean Blue is tough to find....

Yeah I'm not being super picky but the black interior is a deal maker . Salvage title just seems like a disaster so I'm trying to find without .
It's too bad there is not too many cars under 35k on the market today I would want to order to my likings . I could go for a frs but it would need a turbo ordered the same damn day . Same goes for a civic or something . I would consider a car payment if I stumbled across a 3rd gen tl-s though in grey or black on black 6mt

I think you can find plenty of CL6s under 150k. I had to go to OK to get mine 8-9 years ago, but it was worth it. I just turned 100k and would love a new car but can't find anything out there I'm that thrilled about for the price. ugh.
I shopped the ZDX, but the drive is not sporty, but i like the design and Advance trim for the used prices.

I'm not smart enough to figure out how to post the link. You can go to www.cargurus.com and do a search. There are currently only 5 6 speed cars showing up any distance from my zip (67212 Wichita, KS).
