hey guys, need your suggestion on speakers / amp
folks
i am considering upgrading my stock spakers and amp. i've read through most of the threads here related to this topic, and gathered the following --
- we do not need a line converter since we have the stereo schematic
- we can completely bypass the stock amp, which is located in the trunk. Navi sound will still work.
I was happy with the stock system until I installed the external MP3 player, which makes the sound distort at heavy bass. Also I had to use a FM Modulator, which compromises the sound quality in general.
i dont have a big budget... plus my ear probably cannot tell the difference between a $500 and $1000 setup. I just want something that doesn't sound "bad" like what I have now. i went in a local audio shop today and they recommanded a $1100 setup (WAY out of my intended budget) -- Pioneer 6x9 3 way with Compression Horn for rear, Pioneer 6 1/2 2 way with Compression Horn for front, Alpine 5 channel amp, and Coustic 10" sub.
This setup is about 2x my intended budget. I don't really need the sub. Can you guys give me any "economical" setups / brands for speakers and amp?
again, i dont have ears for high-end systems, just want something that doesnt suck.
Last question, is it possible to install an external switch (instead of using the FM Modulator) for the external MP3 player? (it's the harddrive based one... Neo Jukebox). I assume we can use the RCA on an aftermaket amp to do that... but would like to get confirmation.
thanks guys for any suggestion you can share.

I put in a Soundstream SPL 12 and bought a $200 2 Ohm, Bazooka 1000Watt amp. Circuit city installed in all in a small box and it only took about two house. Total cost was about $400. I had a $4K stereo in my last car and with just one sub and this cheap amp, it seriously rivals it. The stock speakers sound great when you move the bass to a sub.

Just looked up on the web, Soundstream SPL 12 is pretty affordable... like $120. Is that gonna fit tho? since it's 12 inchs in diameter. also what did you use for front speakers?
