Are hearders noisy?

All of you with headers. Me and my friend had an argument last night. He says that when you install headers, you car becomes very loud, the engine becomes very loud. I told him that it does not make sense and that the exhaust will make the car loud, but not headers. I ve never owned one and I have not heard anyone on this board complain about headers being loud. His dad owns an auto shop so he has been around this stuff, but I think he is wrong here. All input welcome.

Your friend is wrong. The headers do NOT make your car loud. In the case of the CL-S, the difference in noise is barely noticeable. Many people will say there is no difference... I disagree with that as well. Those people can't hear!!! I've had the headers a few weeks now and I've scrutinized the noise levels a great deal. I've driven with the radio off for the majority of the time and there is a tiny tiny increase in the amount of noise and the sound of the engine is now a bit raspier. That's it.

lol. Hey a pretty fun slip up on my part, and unintentional too. I knew I was right. The headers are not noisy (but not as quiet as stock).

The only time I've noticed a big difference in noise is on high HP v8's. But those are another animal altogether.....

Anyone remember the post about the "chamber angel"? Of course he meant camber angle but my dirty mind thought of something else.

I'll be going back to Calsonic in a couple of weeks. They will be doing a repeat test of the DBA, 3rd Order and 6th Order sound analysis now with the headers.

This should prove if there is or isn't a change in the sound level. IMO, it'll be very little.

I had 4 into 1 headers on a BMW 2002 and all they did was make the engine sound great at 8000 rpm (like an offy at the Indy 500). They didn't increase the noise levels at all, only produced a "smoother" note.

I think some people confuse headers with open exhausts and modified exhaust systems.

A proper header may change the timber or tone of the exhaust (due to the change in exhaust pulse timing), but shouldn't make the system much louder (or any louder).
