This stuff they sell in paint stores called Goof-Off works really well at taking gum out of carpet, removing paint stains, and a whole lot of other crap you'd never expect. Never tried it on a floormat though... be careful, it's strong and might bleach the carpet if you use too much.

same thing happened to me. i think i used carpet stain remover that they had at the autoparts store.
