got whooped by a firehawk/firebird

Hey guys, I coming home about 11pm tonite. I pulled up to a light less than half-mile from my house. There is a black trans am or firebird/firehawk chromed out waiting at the light on my left. I already knew what time we I pulled up beside him. So I take VSA off and switch to SS. I thought I should at least get a good launch.

Light turns green and we punch it. I couldn't hear his V8 due to my music being up(no-no) because I couldn't hear my revs. So the car jumps about 2 carlengths ahead of me and slows down in my lane to taunt me. So I swurve around him and he punches it. Then he waves his hand out the window like he was saying "uh-uh". We are both in the middle lane so I get my original right lane and he jumps back over and gets on the brakes. By this time, I'm high-beaming him because he acting like a jerk and my turn was coming up. So I high-beam one more time and make a right turn on my street.

First, I'm mad because he had soo much torque to get ahead of me of so quickly and start acting like an ass.

Second, I'm mad at myself because I'm not used to flooring it and knowing when to shift gears in SS.

Third, I need my mods asap. I just got my CT exhausts yesterday. I'm hoping to get a CAI real soon and OBX or CT headers.

I can't get beat like that again. It kinda hurt my pride, but got me more motivated to step it up on gettin my mods.

Man, when I got my ass served last night, I was like "DAMN, that muthafucka is fast!!!"

Don't have that much money to boost it. I'm on my way to getting some headers though. I'm putting my CT axle-backs on tonite after work. Shined them up last night and they look spectacular!

Once I get the headers and CAI put on and I hear that growl, they better not sleep!

Kevin, whose silver CL is this? Is it sitting on 19's?

For what-ever-it-is-worth: try to pick your battles a little
more carefully! Playing with most American v-8's is going to get you your ass handled to you no matter how many mods you do.
Cl's just do not have the power to take on high torque (in comparison) and high hp cars. Even nitrous will not help and will more than likely get you killed using it on the highway.
I have an absoulte drop dead gorgeous '91 Z28 downstairs in the garage. A sleeper if you will in that is puts out over 300+ hp at the rear wheels and 485 ft lbs of torque (dynoed many times). This car runs in the 12's but looking at it you would think it is just for show. Even with that much power I am carefull who and what I take on.

Nice death. As said above even the S/C won't allow you to kill most v8 F-body's or mustangs.

However it will definitely narrow the gap.

Now, I have to wait til tomorrow morning to get those suckers off!!! I wanted to put my CT axle-backs on tonite!!!

Don't fret my CL friends; I did manage to take down a 4AT fbird a while back. I don't think I would have been looking at his head lights in my rear view mirror if he was driving a 6MT. But it would be fun to find out how I'd do and/or how much I'd loose by - or not.

I'm sorry that you got your ass handed to you, but i think its funny as hell that he slowed down and did the 'hurry-up' motion.

Lemme put it this way, a 6 speed CL-S with just about every hp mod available will still most likely get beat by a stock or midly modified 6 speed LS1 Camaro/Trans Am. A stock 5AT should probably stick to stock automatic Mustangs and other fwd's that dont have alot of hp.

^---not true

I raced a 97 or 98 Formula Trans Am w/ 305hp and I lost by about 1-1.5 car lengths (btw, I didnt use SS and VSA was on, AND I didn't take the car up to redline in each gear). In addition, I'm a 5AT CL-S

Wasnt there a similar scene in 'Gone in 60 Seconds', where Kip (after just having stolen the Porsche 911) taunted some dude in a riced out Civic?

No offense Mister. That's hilarious!! Nice Death though.

sorry bro...

Either you'll have to do some SERIOUS upgrades (i.e. -- at least comptech blower) or just trade in for a new car. Don't sweat it, the CL wasn't meant to compare to the Firebird or the Firehawk. It's a completely different car for a completely different market segment. If you mod a LOT, you might be able to hang with a stock Firebird, but if the Firebird mods he can be untouchable for about $2000 (head/cam work, bigmouth, gear, etc)

Your dreaming. Either the trans-am was sleeping or you need to pinch yourself. The CL-S 5AT is SLOW AS HELL. At best, you're running like 14.8 in the quarter? I freaking Firebird should light you up big time. And what do you mean you didn't take it up to redline? You backed off the throttle to shift EARLY? <sigh>

Sometimes I wish people would go to the track and get a baseline of what their car really runs before they start indulging in their racing fantasies...

Heh.. He's right -- an LS1 with tires/intake can probably run high 12's...

:pfawk: hey cocksucker...first off if you read the fucking story you would see that I didn't take it to redline because I just got the fucking car and I didnt feel like pushin it all the way...and also, IF YOU READ THE FUCKING STORY....I talked with the fucking guy before AND after the damn race and he was shocked at how well I kept up. He told me he had a 98 (OR a 97, I dont remember) Formula Trans Am with 305hp, and that's all I fucking know. Doubt me all you want, not like I fucking care....

All I was saying is that I kept up w/ a similar type car...who knows if it had an LS1 or what not. I'm not a huge american muscle car guy, but I do know that those V8's will rips us to shreds (depending on which one). And since when was running high 14's stock considered slow? It's not fast, but the car sure beats a majority of cars stock on the road.

97= LT1
98= LS1

A stock automatic LT1 will probably run mid 14's, so thats not out of the question to keep up with one, especially from a roll. LS1's are much more to contend with, especially from a roll. Even stock automatics are easy 13's.

not cool dood, you're comparing two totally different cars...

compare the V6'ers to us and then who's slow? Either way, this is a luxury sport coupe that runs in the high 14s stock....I don't consider that slow at all. Chek out type-r's car, he aint exactly slow, is he?

You think I dont realize they are 2 completely different cars? I could find alot of things that are similar too ya know. 2 doors, same price range, marketed as the "performance" model of the respective manufacturers.

And I know Type-R's is fast, but still not as fast as alot of stock LS1's. :P
