another good question. But why don't you (if your tint isn't over the legal limit) show the records for the tinting or get a signed letter from the tinting company that the tint is X% and that X% is under the legal limit of Y%.

as far as the program you can usually pay like 80$ and they'll let you keep the tint...of you can pay 10$ if you fix it, and then another 100+$ to re-tint the windwos

Hmm that is messed up they let you keep the tint. The only reason I can think of doing that is so that they can make money and... you guys out on the west coast are just weird. No two ways about it.

Damn that sucks CLpower. Are you sure you can't tint at all? I thought as long as the cop can see perfectly in, like see your seatbelt on or off, then the tint is okay...
What is your tint? Do you remember?

thats a shit load of cash for tints! i failed inspection on my honda cuz of the tints, i gotta go to the shop to take em off, re-inspect it and get em put back on. in jersey i think it's a $35 ticket. where i live they really dont bother with it. unless the good 'ol troopers decide to do some racial profiling!

Hey CLPower, didn't you recently get a ticket for tint in Huntington Beach? Are they really that dark or are you just unlucky?

rurofan..........your ride looks great. Don't sweat the seatback thing, my driver's side did it and I got a whole new back panel. Seems as though the "el cheapo" plastic push fasteners aren't held exactly in place and can crush easily if not carefully aligned 7.5" on center to fit the metal frame. Plus they are mounted on two flimsy plastic columns on the inside of the back panel--they bend easily too. Fixed mine temporarily with glue gun reinforcement 'til the new part came in. What's with the "NO TINT" on front windows in California?? Sux

it's real lame...every cop i know thinks it's stupid and don't pull people over for it. They just use it sometimes to give speeders a break. Only the real pricks give tickets for it.

I can see why he had a problem; it looks like 20% or darker on that car.
That is the exact reason I only went with only 35% on my car.
In Pennsylvania, anything on the front (3) windows is illegal.
They pretty much ignore 35% and above unless you are asking for trouble and they have another reason to pull you over.
I had 35% on my 91 Legend Coupe for 8-years and on my 88 Daytona Shelby-Z before that and never had a problem.
Before that I had 20% on my Black OMNI-GLHS and 86 Daytona Turbo-Z back in the late 80’s and I got pulled over all the time.
One cop told me once that if they wanted to, they could scrape your inspection sticker off and have your car towed away.

Can you guys help me out with a tint question. What are the grades of tint that can be applied to a car's windows? I keep hearing 20%, 35%, 5% but can you get other percentages, like 40% or 50%?
I've never had any of my windows aftermarket tinted so i'm a little unsure of what's available. I do know that MD and VA have a maximum darkness of 35% allowed, but i'm not sure i want something that dark.
Also if anyone in the Mid-Atlantic states has had their windows tinted at a reputable shop could you pass on the name and location.
Thanks in advance,
BTS

Cl Power, at least you didn't get your shit towed. Colorado pigletto can tow your car for illegal tint. If you get pulled over here for illegal tint, you better you hope you get a cool ass cop or you are white.

Maybe someone can comment on this. I had a friend from work (a few years back) that had a traffic officer on a motorcycle run a razor down his tinted front window!!!! It was aftermarket tint, and he got to drive home with a big gouge *and* a ticket! (This was in Los Angeles.)
15.Is window tinting legal? What about pull-down blinds and window stickers?
The applicable paragraph in the CVC is 26708. It's too long to quote here in full, but basically what it says (disclaimer: this is my own personal interpretation, I'm not a lawyer, don't come running to me if you get
nailed) is that you may not operate with "any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows." Side windows to the rear of the driver are exempted (26708b4), as is the rear window IF you have mirrors on both left-and right-hand sides (26708b8). Tinted safety glass is permitted by 26708.5b.
Therefore, the basic distinction is whether you have tinted glass or tinting that is stuck onto the glass. There's no mention of "factory" vs. "third party." A third-party tint job would be legal if it was done by replacing the windshield and front windows with tinted safety glass, rather than by sticking or painting something onto the existing glass.

i had a friend who had bought a car from the factory with the front windows tinted...the police couldn't do anything since it was factory. I don't know if this is true, but it's what he said.
