Get the sound without the cost - Muffler Washer Mod

I have another solution thats even cheaper then removing the exhaust resonator and i'm surprised it hasnt been discovered.
I unbolted one muffler with a 14mm wrench and put 2 12mm flat washers on each of the 2 bolt studs. Bolted the muffler back up.
This creates a small space before the exhaust gas passes thru the muffler between the muffler and the pipe. The result is increased sound around 2k and 4k. You do lose a little backpressure/torque cause its essentially a leak in the exhaust system but you can always undo it and it costs like $1 in washers.
The sound is good, dare I say close to G35ish. Im gonna try going 1 washer each bolt soon and see if it changes the sound/increases the torque. I love this mod. Cheap, easy to do and easy to undo. Works on the TL, CL and probably any car with bolted on mufflers.

Questions? Comments? Thanks for looking.

I guess its not a bad idea if you are looking for sound more then performance.

Yes, there is a decrease in torque but i cant imagine it being much different then running a 3in cat back.

Why do people do the exhaust resonator removal mod or get it replaced with a $50 magnaflow resonator? Because they want sound. People pay 20-80 dollars for that mod and im just trying to give people similar results.

The washers go right infront of the muffler. Doesnt let any of the pre-cat exhaust gasses out. and it sounds like an aftermarket exhaust/G35 without the look or cost.

Why do I feel like im getting flamed for this? I thought it would be a pretty decent mod.

You're creating a vac into your muffler, a siphon more or less. It's using the exhaust flow to suck in the air in the space...and the water...and the road grime. Sounds like a good way to rust out your muffler ahead of time.

yea i thought about that, I havent ran it in the rain yet and I will probably cover the area up when i wash my car. But the exhaust gases push out, not in. I can feel the exhaust come out when i put my hand on the flange at idle.

They push out at idle, but I bet it's a different story @ WOT

I would think that it would push out even more at WOT, but I see your logic.
Low humidity right now and sunny skies. I may undo the mod when the rain sets in and fog comes back.

I ran single muffler for a couple of weeks, just unbolted the muffler and left it off the pipe. It was pretty loud but i was still muffing about 25-50% of the exhaust gases. No friggin torque though.

Have any of you driven the car with open headers? Theres no power. Surprisingly though, its not that loud until you get above 3k rpms.

That's crazy, just a few washers to make that change.

I'm not going to do it but I guess it's something else "to do"

you obviously can't realize that mod is short for "modification". and modification is changing something, which is exactly what is going on...

i think it was 2, and it probably was a cold start... remember this was way back...

its louder because it's an "exhaust leak". plus check out distorted and ross's exhaust clips, no mufflers. sounds nice

of course your not gonna do it noah, with your comptech axleback. This mod is for people that have the stock system and want to try something before spending 50 bucks to remove the mid-muffler.

i couldnt do no mufflers. The lack of torque would kill me.

Update: 1 washer on each side is sufficient enough. The sound is almost the same as 2 washers but you get more of your torque back. Also less chance of water getting into the muffler.

So you did this to a perfectly good CompTech system, and you don't think it's ricey? Sounds like the very definition of Ricey to me. Way to F up a great system.

In fact the whole thing is ricey even for a stock set up.:theghey:

I did this to my stock muffler, before I put on my comptechs.

No doubt its ricey, but you can take it on and off easily if you dont like it. im just bein a cheap ass and say "hey, make your exhaust louder for 50 cents!" When I did it, I didnt regret it or wanted to change it back.

My bad, I did not see thata the original post was from June. Still thinks its a bad ideal. I'd bet at WOT your pulling cool air into the muffler at the gap. What has less resitance? The 2 inch hole into the muffler or that tiny gap you create? I think your going to pull all kinds of crap into you mufflers.

Depends what you consider good.

IMO, no, straight pipes on this car wont sound good. And not running a cat is illegal btw.

I don't understand how this is a great mod. An exhaust system is supposed to be leak free. I would not take advice in doing this so called "mod." I would call this mod "how to screw up your exahust cans!"

The CL will never sound like a G35. If you want the sound of a G35 buy the damn car people.
