Call me a heretic, but I've used mostly 87 for the last year. I average over 30MPG with it, and get better MPG with 87/89 than with 91/93. My CL-S is basically just a commuter car to me though.
Edit: CR is 9.8:1, I believe.

manual states 91+ only. The car is engineered to work with a premium fuel only. Sure, it will work with 87, but your performance will not be optimal, and you might run into problems (dirty injectors and etc) years from now.
you should have just bought Camry or accord, they are designed to work with 87.\but if you have performance car, it needs 91

Premium gas
I don't believe the hype/advertising or urban legends about the detergent properties of premium fuel versus regular gas. Reputable brands of gasoline - of every grade - contain additives to prevent buildup within your engine.
I seriously doubt that Exxon, Shell or BP would deliberately not put those additives in the lower grades of gas. That would be extraordinarily bad business because the lower grades are what most people buy. If my CLS would run (well) on 87 - I would run 87.
As for octane levels - the only purpose of octane is prevent the fuel/air mixture from detonating at a certain temperature. The higher the octane - the higher the temperature. Using a higher octane than required is foolish. The minimum octane to prevent auto-detonation on the piston upstroke is what you should use.
Using less than the required octane will not cause the CLS to knock - due to the knock sensor - but it will reduce the performance of the car.
I know everyone's situation is different, but it's really not that much more money to run the correct fuel. I fill up my car about every 10 days on average. It has a 17 gal tank, but I usually put 13 gals or less in on a fill-up. 20 cents more per gal = $2.60 more per tank x 36.5 tanks per year = about $95 extra dollars/year. Or, put another way, if you had 1 less Starbucks coffee every 2 tanks of gas you'd break-even on the money. Just run 91!

Like I said - every person's situation is different - and when money is tight every little bit helps. However, even if someone fills up 10 times per month it's still less than $30 extra to use premium. Most folks can find $30 extra in a given month.
I mean - you can take your lady to the movies for $30 as long as you share a coke and she agrees not to eat any popcorn!

I tried all 3. Most of the time I had my CL I used premium. I switched to 87 for a month and 91 for another month. That was about 6-8 fill ups. I never noticed any pinging, or knocking. No CELs.
I went back to Premium for the same reason I use it in my cars now....gas mileage was better and responce was better. And I tested it with my I35 that I have now. Got a lot of crap for using 87 in it. But, I had to check for myself. I do a lot of driving, so for me performance and mileage is an important issue.

Three Wheelin'
87 gas = Ghetto
If you use 87 gas and actually spend money to mod your cars with performance parts for more hp, does that really make any sense at all.
If someone told you that you could have a 10 hp increase for $150 a year, I bet mostly everyone would take it.
Also, it is not proportional with the amount you save at the tank each fill.
You will not get as good of gas mileage with 87. The math is simple.
14 gallons for 93 at 3.29 per gallon at 20 mpg = 280 miles for $46.06
14 gallons for 87 at $3.09 per gallon at 18 mpg= 252 miles for $43.26
So you save $2.80 at the pump, but you lose 28 miles total which equals atleast 1 gallon more at $3.09 per gallon.
So by using 87 vs 91, you actually lose money and you lose hp.
So for all you people its a lose lose situation.

Why the fuck would go out of your way to use 91, when can use 93? That's retarded. I bet they're the same price, as well.
