gas mileage questions!

i know this topic has been beating to death and all. but i have a few questions

okay so my car gets about 15 mpg. i drive city alot so i know that makes a difference.

i also got a axle back exhaust with cai. and i carry at least 250 pounds worth of car audio.

should my mileage really be that low?

Not unless you're foot is in it all the time! Even then... Something seems wrong with that picture!

Even in stop and go traffic with a heavy foot I average between 23-25 mpg..

I keep a log that goes back 3+ years, the curse of being an engineer.

thats really low. Maybe dump some seafoam in the gas tank and clean out your air filter.

Also helps not to hit VTEC all the time.

I like the Seafoam and air filter idea. How many miles are on the car? Have you done regular maintenance? If you're over 100k, have you done the plugs?

Idk, maybe you have a factory freak...

Two hundred and fifty pounds of audio? What do you have back there?

But yeah, it still shouldn't be that low. What's the mileage?

Double check tire pressures, check engine oil and tranny fluid, valve clearance, spark plugs and seals, etc. etc.

You also have to remember that people with CAI's and headers are going to get better mileage.

IMO weight reduction would help with gas mileage better than a CAI would.

But then again I never really paid attention to my MPG before I put in my CAI.

True but there's not much weight reduction to be had unless you are willing to ride around without seats or taking the spare out. Sure there's things like removing the lining in the trunk and the bottom side of the hood but in reality how much is that gonna help?

I get about 19 all city and near 30 all highway.

Depends the type of gas you use too. I get more MPGs using chevron but no matter what station I go to, its always top teir and 91 octane.

Well what you can do if you feel you're getting too low MPG is try going to a station that uses no ethanol. I've read a few people got an extra 3-4 MPG just from filling up with the good stuff.

Or make sure the station you do go to has no more then 10%. Theres a few in my area that have 15%

OP - Your numbers are clearly not right. I've been averaging 26mpg since day one.

Whats your mileage?

Yeah if my local stations start using 15% I'm gonna start using ethanol-free gas 100% of the time.

I meant the miles on the car.

Even so, 235miles on 16 gallons is crazy. I usually fill up at ~400miles and thats only 14.5-15 gallons.

Check spark plugs, air filter, all fluids. Even with 250lbs of equipment you should still be around 21mpg.

Whats your daily commute on average? A short drive that doesn't let the car fully warm up is not good for gas mileage.

^what a bs you just said read b4 you post. They do not recommend seafoam to cars with more that 150k miles.

Anyway i got average 250-260 miles out of my tank to gas light to be on. I drive stop n go and like 20 miles hwy daily to work.

So on average thats 6 start ups. Thats about 4 miles a start up, which could be the reason you aren't getting good mileage. Have you ever gone on a road trip with the car and if so, what was the gas mileage?

Also, letting the car warm up for 5 mins is wasting gas. Unless its really cold (i.e.- temps I highly doubt it reaches in TX), 30 seconds is all you need. Just don't rev it past 3k until its completely warmed up.

I just filled up today after 424.5miles and it was 15.7gallons. Thats about 27mpg. 60% highway, but there were quite a few high rpm pulls getting on the highway and alot of high rpm 1st and 2nd gear action in the city.
