Gas mileage: 6 spd vs. auto Type S

For those that have had both an auto and 6-speed Type S, what kind of gas mileage have you had with each car? I recently went from my '01 CL-S auto to an '03 CL-S 6 speed, and while I certainly didn't buy the car for fuel economy, I've been suprised by the difference in gas mileage.

I drive both cars the same (I really haven't been pushing the 6-speed too hard - well, at least no more than I did the auto). With my '01 auto I routinely got 25-26 mpg in city driving, and an amazing 32-34 mpg on the highway (usually at a steady 75 mph). With the 6-speed, I'm only getting 20 mpg around town, and 25-26 mpg on the highway. I know the 6-speed has lower gearing (2600 rpm at 75 mph vs. 2100 for the auto), but does it make that much of a difference?

It's no big deal, I absolutely love the car and am thrilled with it in every way (including the gas mileage), but I'm curious about others experiences.

I filled today just 5 Gals. At $1.95 at Crappy HESS gas station this is the highest I paid for premium Gas..

There is no Saddam to blame this time. It is only the long labor day weekend where the labors get ripped off!!

Wake up people start complaining!! Why the hike in Gas and it goes quietly too!

I hate that!!

I'm sure the higher revs on the freeway will lower the mileage a little, but not much. I never had an auto but am experiencing an average of 27.6mpg with my 6-Speed. Hit a best of 32.8 once on a road trip...

p.s. You have it easy... here in L.A. it is $2.29 for measly 91 octane... and passing through San Diego I saw 91 for $2.45/gal!

I must have a heavy foot. I barely break 20 mpg combined city/highway with my 6-speed. Less than 25 mpg for sure. I do love the sound of the motor in Vtec range though!!

I have 3k miles on my 6 speed so far, and I have not gotten anything less than 26mpg. My driving is 75% highway, so I'm sure that helps, but I cruise at 80-90pmh, which is about 2800-3100 rpm. I also drive moderately aggressively in the city, with shift points usually above 4k in 1st and 2nd. I have been pleasantly surprised with the gas mileage, especially since gas prices are high right now.

Just like ChadT, I have noticed a decrease in gas mileage with the six speed versus the automatic. By the way, I can get 92 octane in Omaha for $1.80. Probably not enough to entice someone to move here from LA though!

Interestingly, the 2001 cls automatic seemed like it had a much louder exhaust than my 2003 cls - both stock.

Nash, I spoke w/ the girl at my hess station down here after I put in $28 worth of gas (1.96 a gal). She said the price was going way down on tuesday.

I had a 01 CL-S and now have a 03 6 speed. The 6 speed gets slightly worse mileage than the auto. Its because its harder to drive the 6 speed gently. With the auto you can barely touch the gas and it will shift really early, like under 3k. But shifting out of 1st under 3k in the 6 speed just feels wrong. Not to mention you're there before your rear wheels have cleared the crosswalk.

Mostly highway and some back roads in my daily commute. I avg about 26.5 mpg. My highest is 28 mpg and my lowest is 25 mpg. The lowest is due to having too much fun in the VTEC range!

A while back I did a real simple experiment - I compared the MPG for my 'normal style' of city driving to a 'conservative style' of city driving. Guess what -- you step on the gas, you use more fuel.

My average all city stop-and-go Philly traffic tank gets me a whopping 17-19MPG. My normal habits have me revving to low VTEC between shifts, say 4000-5000 as a shift point. I compared this to a tank where I paid close attention to my shift points and kept them around 2500. Guess what -- my MPG went up to 19-20, just like the EPA estimate.

Of course, now that I know my car can get the better mileage, I drive it as I like it and shift in the 4000s for normal driving, and closer to 6000 for more spirited driving. It's only gas after all.

Highway MPG has always been great in this car -- about 30 MPG. Sixth gear is nice for the long roads.

I drove a 6 speed about a month ago...It would def. take some practice to get good MPG's in one.
Interesting though, drove a friend of mine's 2002 Mercury Cougar 5 speed with 2.5 Duatec V-6 and has a nifty LCD on insturment cluster that tells you avg MPG, my best on a 15 mile trip (50/50 city highway) was 20.4 MPG.

Hmm, I just happen to have a car just like that. As a matter of fact the car in question is in fact my car. =) Just wanted to say that I usually get about 20 City mpg, and 30-34 Hwy mpg. Maybe it's because I'm more used to my car and the way it drives. *shrug*

I used to get 26-28 in my 01CLS. My 03CLS6 gets about 2mpg lower. Regardless, there is no way would I go back. This six speed is much more fun to drive, better handling and quicker.

On a recent 200 mile expressway trip, I got 31 mpg on the nose driving about 75-80. But to get to that expressway, I had to stop at probably half of the 25 stop lights between me and the expressway. And two complete stops for tolls.
