Ford is To Sell-Off 51 of It's Concept Vehicles

Ford is to sell 51 concept cars in an auction next month in an
unheard of disposal of unique vehicles.

The cars will be auctioned by Christies of New York on June 16
at Ford's headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan.

The cars include the 1993 Lagonda Vignale Tourer, the 1992
Mustang Mach III roadster concept and one of only two
remaining concept verions of the new Ford Thunderbird.

Car makers rarely let their concept vehicles fall into private
hands, preferring to either maintain them as historical artifacts or
have them destroyed.

Some concept-vehicle collectors have managed to rebuild
several models from junked parts.

"This is an unprecedented event, and the first time a
manufacturer has kindly agreed to release them," Miles Morris,
the international head of Christie's motor car department, said.

None of the concept vehicles are certified for driving on public
roads. Some are running models, while others are simply
"platform vehicles", bodies on frames without interiors or
engines.

The oldest model is the 1960 Ghia Selene II concept, but most
of the vehicles come from the 1980s and 90s.

Morris said the majority would likely fetch between $10,000 and
$40,000, but the Mustang Mach III could bring up to $200,000,
and a 1992 Ghia Focus roadster could bring $120,000.
--------------
Sheesh. That Mustang Mach III Concept is gorgeous, and is powered by a supercharged 4.6 liter V8 engine making 360HP (or essentially very similar to the 2003 Cobra's engine, minus 30HP). I have a 1:18 model of it, I wish I had a quick $200,000 to blow...I'd get it in a heartbeat. You think Ford is trying to gain some money here due to their financial situation?

Ford is doing OK, and this isn't going to be some huge profit generator for them, even at anaverage of 50k each, it'll only be $2.5 million, not eactly huge dollars when it comes to the bottom line of a company that size.

I think it’s a GREAT idea to sell them.
I’m sure you’re going to have to sign one HELL of a “release of liability” to take possession.

I saw a TV show once a few years ago (Dateline I think) and they showed a bunch of SHOW CARS going into the crusher at a scrap yard.
There was a guy there from the insurance company videotaping the whole thing to ensure the cars were destroyed.

I guess it would be a HUGE liability if someone took one of these out on the road and wrecked it.

I shed a tear watching the forklift pierce the side of the cars and one by one lift them into the machine.
They showed a car carrier with like TEN cars on it waiting their turn.
They were all Chrysler concept cars.

SO SAD !!!

It's amazing what companies have to do to avoid lawsuits...

I think it's really cool of Ford to do this, it's great PR for them. It was obviously generate more interest in their vehicles.
