Flywheel with hotspots @ 10,000 miles!

Below are pics of the flywheel on my CL at 10,000 miles. This was installed by Acura in April 2008. The hotspots have evidenced themselves via clutch chatter.

I am not an aggressive driver and I know how to properly shift a manual. (I replaced the clutch on my 98 Honda Accord at 140,000 miles.)

Acura is claiming clutch abuse.

Is the Acura clutch/flywheel that poorly designed? Or did I just get a defective set?

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

cheers,

Did they use the special tool that they should have used? Just cause it's a dealer doesn't mean they do it correctly.

Dual mass flywheel can not be resurfaced. Or at least not easily.

Good point. If not done properly the clutch will just slip. So better off getting new that sucks.

This is a clear case of improper installation.

The tool that compresses the pressure plate. There's a write up somewhere & the parts are listed. Can't find it now. The service manual warns of it.

Or it could be a defective flywheel, or other component.

Aside from the simple fact of early failure, how can you tell?

The special tool for transmission removal and install is listed on page 13-15 and 13-16 of the factory service manual as "EQS02C000012." I'm guessing this is what you're referring to?

If the clutch plate or flywheel had oil or grease on them when it got installed, it can cause the friction material to glaze over and lose a lot of it's grip. This causes the clutch to slip and get hot. When you're putting the clutch together you have to be real careful not get your greasy hands on any of the mating surfaces. It looks like sufficient care was not taken by the installer.

No that's trans. You want the clutch. There's a compressor tool for the Pressure plate, It's in the manual clearly. Don't have access to mine right now.

This looks more like what you're referring to. Do you think a dealer might not have this and just use a clamp?

The Acura dealer (Pike's Peak Acura) called today and said they'd replace my clutch/flywheel under their parts and labor warranty.

As much as they'd prefer to blame the driver, I think they know something's not quite right.

Nice!!! Glad to see they will make it right. Ask for the shop head tech or foreman to do the install...

Interestingly enough, since I've had so many issues with the CL, they have already got the foreman working on it.

This is the same guy, however, who implied that I had either been riding my clutch or dropping it from high revs, and that I was responsible for the damage. He also suggested that the two snapped axles I experienced were due to "hot rodding."

At that point, I pretty much went off on him. The whole service bay got pretty quiet during my monologue.

cheers,

I have found a solution for crappy dealer service. When about to complain, show up with a friend that has a professional video camera with a t-shirt from a local news station with their logo. Start the video tape!

See how fast they are willing to do right.

And I have done this once already.
