You need a supercharger... duh!

J/K. You most likely have the car in full automatic mode, yeah? Well, the car usually won't downshift into 3rd at that speed. Move the car into the SS (sportshift) mode and put the car into 3rd. 3rd gear is awesome at 80 mph. You won't need 4th gear until amost 110 mph.

From Chod's CL FAQ (http://www.geocities.com/~gamesmgr/chod/acura/):

What is the max speed for each gear?
According to Motor Trend:
1st: 42 mph
2nd: 69 mph
3rd: 105 mph
4th: 147 mph
5th: 147 mph

If I'm not mistaken, at around 85 mph, you should be in VTEC and you'll be flying. Of course it won't "feel" as fast as VTEC in 1st gear, but it's plenty fast to outrun most people out there. I don't think there are many points when our car feels "slowwwww." VTEC in 4th gear even feels good. Haven't needed to do VTEC in 5th yet

I think maybe you're not flooring it hard enough..

I hear your pain, maybe some headers and an intake would help a bit, but disregard 5th gear, its just an overdrive gear used for cruising and saving gas. Sport shift can help a bit, but our cars are fastest when you pin it through out and gain momentum. Thats the price we pay for having high horsepower and low torque. I think the engine sound outweughs the ability to snap your head back at those speeds, such a scream to get it into VTEC.

Yeah most likely the problem is that the tranny is downshifting into 4th which is just as bad as 5th.

Next time slap it into SS, take your foot off the gas and slap it down twice. Then go at it.

in automatic CL and TLs how can you use 1st gear only? In SS mode 1 automatically shifts to 2 even if i didnt upshift it. But from 2 to 3 it doesn't do it automatically.. Just only from 1-2 it does it

An auto will not downshift to 3rd gear at around 85ish or above. This is common to all autos. There is nothing wrong with yours.

Everyone failed to mention that the gear ratio just sucks in 4th on the auto's. It's just an engineering design- 4th gear is wayyyyyy tall. It blows! You fall way out of VTEC from the 3rd to 4th shift and have to build back up. By the time you get back up to, and thru VTEC you've already hit the top speed limiter in 4th.

Only way to hold in 1st is gate shift and manually shift throught each gear.

Whenever your racing someone at those speeds just leave it in 3rd gear in SS an hold the RPMs up. 3rd gear is the best gear on the autos. I've won races in 3rd (when I was dead even in 1st and 2nd). Also, take 3rd ALL THE WAY OUT till just before the rev limiter. It carries more momentum going into 4th gear and helps tremendously. You short shift 3rd, your screwed.

I notice on my shift at the bottom it still says 1-2 which are together then d3 then d4 then d5. So i dont see even if i gate shift how i can only hold the first gear without it switching

he meant gate shifting for each gear meaning take the shift knob and go all the way to 1, then 2 and so on. 1-2 doesnt mean they are together, you just start from one which is the gear closest to you, then shift it to the right to second and so on up the gate. it will not shift automatically when you gate shift...only you can control the shift. when in ss though, all you can do is floor it to make 1st go to redline. try gate shifting somewhere open and safe so you can concentrate on the shifting the car manually. good luck.

I don't even think that you can downshift it to 3rd at 85+ in SS mode. I always gateshift because most of the time SS won't let me downshift to third at those speeds.

3rd should take you to about 108-109 mph and fourth will slow you down

Seriously, I always gateshift, it feels like you have a lot more control over it than SS mode.

Also, I would practice gate shifting before you try to race like that. You have to know exactly when to shift because it's very easy to shift too early, or shift too late because it's delayed and you'll be bouncing off the rev limiter. That will slow you down for sure.

yea if you're over 81mph in SS u cant shift to third

i dono bout gate shifting but thats a good idea cuz 3rd actually runs up to like 95/100mph

You say that like you've done it once or twice in the past

I like to open my door and scrape my foot on the pavement at anything past 80 mph.
