FlashinG CEL @5-5.5K,goes away after 30secs

Okay, on the way to work today I went to pass a car. Either when or soon before my VTEC kicked in my CEL started flashing. I freaked out, but then it went away after 20-30seconds. During this time, the car ran fine, I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary.

I drove about 15 miles more down the road and thought it was a fluke, so I hit the gas again! As you guessed, same thing!

So.....my question to you guys and gals...what gives?

This is the first time this has happened to me. I am really concered. And after doing some searching for flashing CEL, I have nothing in common (i.e., no, I didn't have any wheel hop or loss of traction).

My mods (few, so don't laugh) are as follows:
OBX headers (installed since Sept-Oct)
AEM CAI (installed since Sept)

Please HELP!

Cylinder misfire?

On a separate note -- are you coming to the Cedar Point meet? Check the meets section.

It is certainly a misfire. Since it occured twice I would change the plugs and see if it is still occuring.

hmmmm.....

Why the misfire? I mean, why all of a sudden. And if it keeps occuring with WOT at high RPMS, why?

So a random misfire....and that's why the code/CEL went away? Guess I'm confused...or thinking that something assocaited with WOT and high RPMS causes misfire in my car, at least now, for some reason.

Also, if I change my plugs and this reoccurs, then what?

Thanks! I really appreicate the replies.

Cedar Point? I'll have to look into that!

If the plugs are blowing out under a high load then the ECU will read this as misfires. It happened on my new '03 CL-S6 just a few months after owning it. I changed the plugs with some I had laying around and that took care of it. It turned out that others had the same issue and the fix from the dealer was to change the plugs.

As for what else it could be, possibly mechanical and internal. But let's worry about that after the small things have been eliminated.

Heck, it could be just some crap fuel...

cool......thanks

I'll change the plugs this week. But if I don't, can I damage my car in the meantime? I mean, I know she may run rich, but is there any other negative thign I should be concerned about?

THANKS!

Nah. It's not so rich to the point that the car is bogging, which could cause detonation. You will be fine. Just be on the safe side and don't floor it for now.
