These are "summer" tires, so not very practicle if you would need to drive them thru the snow (probably not an issue in NC). probably other/better options out there for both performance and price.

granted, the S03's are excellent tires, but they have a treadwear of 220. these firestones are 340. So, I'm thinking they handle similarly to the S03's, but last 50% longer. I'd bet the downside would be more road noise. Pilot sports also have a tread rating of 220.

yeah ... opening line from the overview page from TireRack on these tires ---
"Like the original Firehawk SZ50, the Firehawk SZ50 EP (EP for Extended Performance) is an Ultra High Performance "summer" tire developed to provide comfort, performance and value."
The Michelin Pilot Sport A/S's have tread rating of 400 which give you all season but are more costly, and the Sumitomo HTR+'s have a tread rating of 360 and are 1/2 the price of the Michelin's. People in here have been giving both good reviews, but these are both A/S rubber and maybe not what you're looking for.

Is there another summer only tire with a treadwear rating of 340 or higher?
and, how much difference would summer tires and all season ultra high perfornace tires make? can these be worse then the stockies in snow?

Summer tires have a sticky compound, with little to no siping (the cuts in the tread), as well as a pattern that maximizes tire contact with the road (it's not smooth rubber since it has to disperse water and small rocks). The siping is what gives you grip on ice. A blocky tread that can unload snow is good for snow. Summer tires don't give you either of these traits. You get awesome handling (since the tire doesn't have siping and a deep tread), but you'll be stuck in a couple inches of snow, with no ice traction.

FYI, Treadwear Ratings should only be used to compare tires within manufacturers. Each manufacturer calculates the treadwear rating according to their own formula. And since we usually are not comparing tires within manufacturer, the treadwear rating is practically useless (Thank your federal government for appeasing the tire companies and not consumers, for which this info was mandated).

i used to have Firestones on my Accord and i loved them but i got cheap and went to a Goodyear(which isn't as good as the Firestone)
have you thought about the Bridgestone Pole Position(i've heard those are pretty awesome tires )
