The car manufacturer tells you what pressure to run for your car. The tire manufacture tells you what pressure is max (for max load) for the tire. You should follow the car manufacturers pressure unless you are going to over load the car then you would bump it up to the tires max.

i agree, but when the car is parked the front 2 tires look underinflated as a result of engine weight. i have it @ 38 right now & they feel better?!?!?!?!

I use the pressure on the tire cause my tires are aftermarket goodies so I would prolly use the tires markings on the stock as well. just a thought

I always use the tire pressure printed on the doorjamb. It's printed there on every car (federal law). In our case it's 32 psi front and rear. It also gives the pressure for the spare. (Yes, you should check it from time to time; nothing sucks more than to have a flat spare when you really need it.)
Going around 5 psi higher will probably not hurt your tires, but I would make extra sure that both tires on the front are the same, and both on the rear are the same. Un-even pressure is the worst on tires as far as pressure goes, because it causes the car to track towards the low tire, then you compensate with the steering, and it eats at all of the tires.
I would go no higher than 5~6 psi over 32

Over inflation causes the contact patch to be distorted. It bulges the center of the tire where as under inflation rides on the outside edges. Ideally you want the contact patch to be flat. Over time the tire will wear faster in the center than on the edges.
