Extended warranties on used cars

If you purchase a late model used car at a dealership, can you get an extended warranty on it? I know several manufacturers, (e.g. - Lexus) offer extended powertrain warranties standard on their "certified" used vehicles. Say you were to buy a '97-'99 car with 10-40k on it. Could you get something like a 7yr/100k bumper to bumper warranty on it just like you could if you bought a brand new car? Any idea on how much something like that would cost?

I ask because a friend will be buying a used DeVille (I know, I know, spare me the flames ) within the next few months. Since it's a GM vehicle, I'm recommending he get some type of warranty. We've test driven a few and it's amazing how low quality the entire car feels. But hey... he likes em' so to each his own.

TIA...

I used to sell cars a long time ago (hey, I was young, stupid and clueless) and at our dealership you could buy extended warranties on used cars. I think the logic was that the dealership had gone over the car and didn't find anything majorly wrong with the car, therefore the extended warranty company wouldn't be warrantying an already broken car. Which is why you can't buy a car from some random d00d and get a warranty from a dealer.

That's my $.02 ...

P.S. If that's a DTS, that car is pretty pimp for a white-hair barge =) 300hp and 0-60 in like 7.0 secs =)

You can get an extended warranty for pretty much any use car. The more used it is, the more conditions attached. Shouldn't be too costly, though (i.e. <$1000).

check with the dealership, it used to be if it was still under 12/12 you could buy a gmpp but they may have switched it to 48/50 by now like most other mfg's (its been a couple of years since i worked in gm)
