Wow what a depressing read. I can't believe car salesmen make so little!! Didn't know they worked such long hours either. The salesman sells a $20,000 car and makes off with $350? That sucks!

I despise auto-sales people. Most of them used to be low-life trash, and now they got to wear a tie and do handshakes. Makes them feel important, something they never had before. They are praying to find a weak personality to scam more money... I feel bad for people who pay more for something they shouldn't. Sure, they need to make profit, but they should only make as much profit as they should.
Thanks to Internet sites like carsdirect.com, consumers can be educated now. Last time when I bough my parents Maxima, I got it like $1500 bellow invoice, I brough printout from carsdirect.com... first the sales guy was like "look, those prices are not real... bla bla". I was like "I dont have much time for BS, is it "yes" or "no". He was pissed off, but he sold it ... he knew I would get it from carsdirect.com had he said "no".
fuking pricks....

i love "pitting" myself against car salesmen. I love getting educated about the product and then deflating their baloon. you can't get mad at them!! It's all a game. They have to earn a living , too. If they can get sticker from some schmuck, why shouldn't they?

:edit: I didn't read the article. It's one thing to try to get top price, it's another thing to be unethical. I like fuckin with those bastards, too, but that is wrong. :o

This is exactly how it was when i went to buy my CL. I knew so much about the car that i caught one of the dealers saying so much BS it wasn't even funny.

Like you said its all a game.

Don't feel sorry for them. Just like anything else good sales people make a lot more money than "average jobs". There are louzy ones that should not be in the sales profession and give the bad rap for the rest of the guys. If the guys are proactive generate own sales leads and follow up well, they can do very well. When was the last time your car salesman ask you for an referral??? I sell a service not cars. I cold call all the time and enjoy it I make much better than average but I work for it!!!

Damn, Zamo. Nice find, really. But next time, couldn't you find one that is a little longer? Just kidding.

I don't play their game, trying to work with them, figureing that if I play fair with them, they will be fair with me.

Leaving taxes, fees and liscencing out of the picture (they can't controll those costs), I tell them I will give them my old car and X much bucks for the new one. I ALWAYS give then a price that I know they will not accept, then work my way up, three times. If no deal is struck after offer #3, I walk.

I love when they write number on paper "this will cost you $xxx a month, how about that?" I am like "F... you, I want to buy this car for X dolors, and I will finance it myself if you give me bad percent (always check with peoplefirst.com and eloan.com, they should match their offer or dont finance it through dealer"
