Talking DIY: Steering Column AEM U.E.G.O Installation w/ pics (56k beware)

I just installed this tonight and thought I would post a couple of pics and a couple of steps for a clean install.

BTW: Camera is 7.2mp so its not the greatest quality.

Before:

Products: AEM UEGO wideband, Autometer 2 1/16" Gauge Cup (Black) part #2204

Remove the steering column panel (just clips right off)

Make sure mounting bracket is center on column cover:

Drill 5/8" hole right behind mounting bracket:

Feed wires through hole and I zipped tied to insure they wouldn't pull out the back and damage the gauge.

The gauge is not fully hooked up with the wide-band sensor and power so it is not lit up.

Day Shot:

Going to post more pics later.

wow, that looks absolutely terrible. your nice OEM cluster is almost completely obstructed.

why not do something nice inside the center console, in the fake ashtray, or the glovebox even?

More comments welcome please.

putting it by the OBDII is a great idea, but you would still have to somehow have access to the connection for inspection.

i commend you for trying to mount some gauges, but i think there is a much cleaner way to do it.

I have my trans temp mounted there but I off set it to the left so as to not interfer with the other guages. The other difference is I just used double sided tape so it is easly relocated when I get more motivated and just wraped the wires in flex loom and ran them straight back with no drilling, but so far I think I like were it is. Take a look.....Clintonrcolbert@myspace.com

I guess I wonder why all the electronics with no mods to warrant a need for them. And I do think it looks really bad. Just a lot of clutter. Get a pillar pod if you wanna keep the AEM.

Maybe one or the other would work in front of the cluster, but not both.

i like it, but i think cocked to the outside of the steering column would probably be better looking. however they're all in really good position for the driver to see, so atleast that's a plus.

Cause you have to be able to keep an eye on your A/F all the time. It's so important in a N/A car that car makers neglect to include them.

Well.... you are right and thats a valid question. I am preparing to get a supercharger and want to have everything set up and ready to go with reliability. Tuning is critical in putting down all the power you can from your motor. If not then the chance for a f**k up is inevitable.

Nothing personal against anyone in particular, but there are many who have just slapped on a s/c and called it a day then cry when something breaks or puts down less power than they anticipated.

Do you know where I can pick up a pillar pod from? Cause' that would be very helpful. Thanks.

Sure but a A/F meter has nothing to do with tuning. You goto a shop and have it tuned. You don't have to have a A/F meter to have a car tuned reliably. Gauges like boost/vacuum, fuel pressure, oil pressure, or trans temp would be more useful I think.

I was also thinking of mounting it on the defrost vent on the dashboard, (part# 17 in pic)but not sure if it will mess with gauge being so close to the vent in direct path of air flow. Eventhough I really dont use the defrost but everyonce in a while.

Don't mean to be direct but your WRONG... It is crucial when messing with the fuel curve, valve timing, forced injection etc. that you don't run to lean or to rich. You need the wideband for tuning and tuning only, otherwise I would have gotten a cheap ass narrow band gauge.

And Thanks for the link.

So you're doing all your tuning yourself?

Na, it will be tuned on a DynoJet 224x at my local shop: http://www.gscmotorsports.com/gsc_shop.html

They will be using the gauge while tuning on the dyno. Then once everything is set it will be used for monitoring purposes. Then if I add or change any mods then I will have it ready to go. It's very accurate and a recommendation from several people for the route I want to go.

I guess with the cars I've had in the past I've just let them use their equipment. It's higher quality then any gauge you can buy and doesn't cost anything.
