Disappointed in my CL-S

Ok. My best friend has a '01 330i. We ran about 12 times, same road, same conditions(about 80 degrees.) i drove his car half the time, he drove my car half the time, so i know it wasnt bad starts or whatever and that it wasnt the driver. Every single damn time, the 330i won. Redicuiously. I mean, c'mon i have AEM CAI and i figured that would make me pull on him, but nope, i see my car start to trail every time. Maybe i have one CL-S from the slow batch or something, but i figured i would win at least once. we both have 18 inch wheels so i know that wouldnt be a factor. His car is just so quick off the line its not funny, so much more traction. Where in my case i would peel out like a bitch. I even tried to gradually punch it so it wouldnt peel out. The best race we had was when i was driving his car and he was using SS and VSA. I guess he got quicker off the line or something. All in all, im just disappointed in my car

I hear ya.

Glad to see a realistic CL-S owner.

I don't believe all these insane stories of 330/M3/Audi S4 kills, makes no sense.

Now it was a street race so factor in all the variables you like but I beat on 2X light from light. (330 that is) S4 and M3 kills are a whole other can of worms.

I test drove a 330i before i bought my CL-S. I was impressed but I wouldn't consider it that much of an improvement. With the options that I wanted (all standard on the Acura) the car came out to over $42,000. And it still didn't have Xenon lights... What a joke! (Although I almost dished out 52K for an M3)

I'd sooner believe your 330 kill than the M3/S4 .. that's just too much.

But light->light you beat him? I'm a bit surprised as they have much better take-off and more power to the wheels than our car. Anything is possible though.

Well.

I cant say Ive ran against a 330 yet... but I dunno...

I kinda do find it a bit hard to believe a CL-S/w CAI losing by much to a 330i

Have you ever checked that your 2nd stage intake valve thingy is working properly?

Other then that. I just dont know.... and Id be dissapointed to.

Im sure he had the sport package... why dont you invest in some grippy tires for traction? I mean... im sure he invested in some tires for the winter, no?

Well then eclipse, you tell me how i was beat everytime then. If you can beat the 330's with just your xypher cai. I dunno if it was his better gear ratios or what because i noticed when his car changed gears, mine was still climbing towards red line...

Our cars are not that fast. They need way more power for the weight of the car. I still love the looks of it and the comfort but I wish it had more power.

I agree, it's the weight that kills us. Although the Bimmers have less hp than us, we are much heavier and have FWD, which certainly doesn't help. Trannys are another story altogether.

Probably though, i mean with the way his car responds and reacts its still quicker. by the time i floor it, my car will be gathering its torque, etc.. and he will be gone, i dunno, i guess ill just have to try tHAT TOMARROW or later tonight... OH ya, it might be the blue bulbs

how much gas is in the tank? If you have 18" rims with good tires, and you are still squealing, it means there is not enough weight over the back tires to plant the rubber...

Beating a m3 is a can of worms??? WTF!!!

Next time I'll try to get it on film of me graddually pulling away from my buddies m3. If its auto a type S w/ headers WILL pull on it. no joke. manual diff story.

Also if the 330 was a manual it can drop the gear at a higher rpm than our type S starting at 1000.

the only thing im dissapointed in my type S is the MUTHA F@#$@ken paint!!

I thought the difference here would be that the 330 achieved its peak torque at lower RPM's, but after doing a comparison (www.edmunds.com) the bimmer achievs 214 ft-lbs @ 3500 while the CL does 232 ft-lbs @ 3500 RPM's. The only other thing I can think of is that the 330 is about 400lbs lighter.

If it was me I'd go find and race on a road that the CL could hook up on. If the CL could hook up I'll bet it would be a different story.

It's your rubber. You may think Toyo is a good tire (which it may be), but it's not going to compare to the Pirelli P-Zero tires. P-Zero's compete with Pilot Sports and Pole Positions. My TL-S with Headers and intake doesn't even peel out, with STOCK tires.

That and aren't your wheels 18" chrome? Geez... talk about weight. While he's running Momo race inspired wheels you're running show wheels. Your wheels/tire combo alone probably lost your .2-.3 off your 60 ft.

As most have correctly said, its the weight. Along with the 400lb weight difference (as someone pointed out) your 18" rims (are they chrome) do not help getting up to speed. Imagine your launching with two 200lb folks in your car along with a very large Labrador (to account for your Giovanna's). I know when I have two average sized people in my ride the car is not at all peppy. Ask your friend for another go. Then have two or three Russian grandmothers hop into his car. Remove about 1/2 your gasoline. Take out your seats except the driver and I'll put lots o money on you. Then arrogant BMWowner will be nicked as pissedonBMWowner.
Deal?

Good Luck

I think the Rear Wheels help Quite a Bit, IMHO

There is nothing wrong with the tires (although I don't have the exact same size as you do). How heavy are the wheels?

If you go to an 18" wheel, it needs to be about 3 lbs lighter than the stock 17" wheels to spin-up the same (have the same rotational inertia). (The 3 lbs is an approximation only -- OK)

If you go to a very light 17" rim or a very light 18" rim (I believe Astroboy comes to mind) you would probably be better off.

The Bimmer is lighter, has a manual, and in stock form beats the Acura. So, an AEM only gets you about 5HP and you may be losing the equivalent of 10HP in the wheels, so according to the car mags and tests, you SHOULD LOSE!!!

(This is just my opinion -- everything is a trade off.)

BTW -- I have to abuse the car to get a the tires to break loose on acceleration (and we talking about a little rub (no squeal) for such a short time, that I couldn't qualify how little it is...

You're not launching correctly...a little peel and you should go....obviously you were giving full throttle at the launch. You should peel a bit and then you should hook up and spin it to redline....Hmmm...I think that perhaps the BMW takes less skill to drive...that would make some sense...

he didnt have sport package, but i think he has the other one. I didnt loose by bad , maybe a car length or two, but c'mon. Thats still pretty bad considering i have 45 more HP or something, ven though my car is heavier, but still...
